What a great way to discover the city and learn about its darker history! Follow the lantern of your tour guide to Ottawa’s numerous haunted buildings, some of which are supposed to be among the most haunted spots in North America. There are five haunted walks in Ottawa: Secrets of the Château, Crime & Punishment Jail Tour, Naughty Ottawa Pub Walk, Ghosts and the Gallows and the Original Haunted Walk. The Crime & Punishment and Ghosts & Gallows tours take you to the Old Carleton County Jail, now the HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel, where you will see jail cells, death row and gallows. Hard to believe this place has been turned into a hostel - a haunted one at that!
Have a spooky good time!
It was special because i went here for a class trip with some friends ... and it was kewl not that scary, but its a good way to learn about Ottawa's History ! , But yeah this is like about the mining part and the old Jaill housee on some old people who had died and yeah its kewl check it out !
My parents took me on the Haunted Walk when we came to Ottawa. I didn’t think it would be scary at all but it was super creepy! Our guide took us in an old jail where they used to hang people and told us really cool stories about how it was haunted. I was a little scared, especially since all of their stories are true! I bought a book about ghosts in Ottawa from the gift shop and want to go on more tours. It was awesome!
This is a fun activity to do in the fall, especially around Halloween time which is their peak season. There are several tours around the area including a walk through the old gallows and prison or around local area buildings. The Haunted Walks office is on Sparks street at Elgin and prices are inexpensive- tours leave regularly in the evening and go for about 2 hours. Bring some warm clothes for the outside tours and they will warm you up with some hot apple cider at the end!
In the downtown area, famous landmark buildings known for ghost sightings include the Chateau Laurier.
One of the options we had in our package was to take a Haunted Walks of Ottawa tour. This is an opportunity that we readily snapped up.
Haunted Walks of Ottawa offers several different tours. We chose the Original Haunted Walk, but they also offer the Crime and Punishment Jail Tour, Secrets of the Chateau, or the Ghosts and Gallows Tour. All tours are available in either English or French, and I think other languages can be arranged for group bookings.
Our tour lasted about 90 minutes and was quite interesting. Haunted Walks will only include a stop on their tour if there have been more than three sightings of a phenomenon. The tour was spooky, but not too scary, so it would be quite suitable for kids, probably 8 and over would be a good guideline. The ambience is played up by the fact that the guide wears a hooded black cloak and carries a lantern to light the way. The walking isn't terribly strenous, so don't worry about having to be in great shape to enjoy this.
Not being partial to bars and nightclubs, I appreciated having this fun option for something to do in the evening. The walks are also quite affordable, ranging from $10-$15 per person. Reservations are recommended.
Suuuure...we might look touristy but it's actually a fun walk...you get to learn about the history of Ottawa and it's a nice exercise after a hearty meal. hehehehhe
Tickets are $12 and if you're an HI memeber, heard it's $10. There are a variety of tours offered, we took the Ghosts and Gallows one and that lead us to the HI Hostel (aka ex jailhouse).
