Things to Do

Hiking the Bruce Trails

Hiking the Bruce Trails, Owen Sound

hotsauce28 Says:  The Bruce Trails is an 800 km hike that follows the Niagara escarpment from Niagara to the Bruce Peninsula. I've only hiked a fraction of it but what I saw in a few miles convinced me to do the whole trail bit by bit. I felt like I was in a rain forest and all of a sudden,...

Historical connection to South England

Historical connection to South England, Owen Sound

airkarat Says:  Christ Anglican Church in Meaford has stained glass windows created from fragments of glass from the churches bombed in WW2 England. The pieces were salvaged by Reverend Harold Appleyard from Meaford who served as a Military Chaplain during the war years. The glass was...

Cobble Beach Resort: Best views of Georgian Bay

Cobble Beach Resort: Best views of Georgian Bay, Owen Sound

SherelPurcell Says:  With only 10 rooms, the Cobble Beach Resort feels very private. You can visit the hot tub, steam room, saltwater pool and fitness area on the bottom level via the small elevator from outside your room on the second floor wearing the robe provided. Very convenient with little...

Brae Briar B&B: 5 Star Breakfasts at your Home Away from Home

Brae Briar B&B: 5 Star Breakfasts at your Home Away from Home, Owen Sound

Suzanne123 Says:  Elizabeth has breakfast perfected to an art form. My favorite is french toast/waffles/pancakes with Real Maple Syrup and homemade jams and this is why I prefer to stay in B&B's. She made me homeade waffles on a heart shaped waffle iron. She dusted them with icing sugar and...

Harrison Park Campground: Get back to nature

Harrison Park Campground: Get back to nature, Owen Sound

hotsauce28 Says:  At the start of the road trip, we weren't too sure whether we'd find a place to camp but just incase, we packed a tent and just asked the locals to suggest a place that was still open. One directed us to Harrison Park with a comment "well, it's not the best campground - kind...

Solstice Bed & Breakfast: Not a doily in sight

Solstice Bed & Breakfast: Not a doily in sight, Owen Sound

airkarat Says:  In Walter's Falls between Owen Sound and Collingwood is a very unique bed and breakfast - an old church converted to a clean, professionally-decorated home. The owners have given it a New Agey, almost occultish feel. This would be a good trip for the late fall harvest with...

Rocky Raccoon: WOW

Rocky Raccoon: WOW, Owen Sound

madmomma Says:  This place gave me a WOW experience. My partner and I had a wonderful meal at the Rocky Raccoon on the main street in Owen Sound. We stopped in without reservations for dinner. The chicken dish was excellent, seasoned as I like - which I never get. The chef came to the table...

The Rusty Gull: Waterfront seafood haven

The Rusty Gull: Waterfront seafood haven, Owen Sound

yooperprof Says:  Whenever I'm visiting a lakeside town in the middle of North America, I always head down to the waterfront and look for a bustling restaurant with good foods of the harbor and plenty of local cars in the parking lot. It's pretty much a sure-thing that I'll find fresh fish...

Nightlife

In town.: Nightlife? Not so much.

In town.: Nightlife? Not so much., Owen Sound

Audibot Says:  Owen Sound isn't really a place to come to for nightlife... but if you must, there are a couple of rather dismal bars (as someone else mentioned above). In the winter around Christmastime, there's a rather impressive display of lights and decorations all along the river...

The Harb: Bar Scene Sucks

The Harb: Bar Scene Sucks, Owen Sound

n_a_drescher Says:  When 'going out on the town' in Owen Sound, there's not much selection. Basically, you have two places to choose from, Beach Brothers, which has a very small clique following, and The Harb, which has, over the years, become the better of the two bars. Right above The Harb...

Local Customs

cement elevator

cement elevator, Owen Sound

yooperprof Says:  At first I thought this was another of those impressive Great Lakes grain elevators that you see dotting the Lake Huron shore. But a VTer who lives in Owen Sound informed me that this is actually a storage system for powdered cement. The things that you learn via VT!

Old Townhomes

Old Townhomes, Owen Sound

yooperprof Says:  Owen Sound was a prosperous manufacturing center in the late 19th and early 20th century. I was glad to see that a good deal of the housing stock from 100 years ago has been preserved - and is still in relatively good condition!

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: If you're doing any sort of hiking along the trails, make sure you have good hiking boots. It can get quite slippery and trainers just won't cut it - lots of moss covered rocks and watch out for the tree roots!

Photo Equipment: YES!

Miscellaneous: We took a portable burner to make coffee when we found a pretty spot during the hike. No open fires allowed!

St. George's Anglican Church

A little bit of Suffolk in Ontario?

Favorite thing: St. George's is a very striking and attractive Anglican Church on the eastern side of the town center. It dates from the early 1880s, and was built with the local "Niagara Escarpment limestone." It's in a historic style that reminds me of some of the classic churches of rural East Anglia: John Constable could have painted it!

It's at "Salvation Corner" - the intersection of 10th Street and 4th Avenue east.
