Being up North gives us all the opportunity to become one with nature. In and around Port Elgin are some fabulous bike trails along the lake shore or even through the back woods! There are also many many little 'drivable' roads along the lake shore...Takes you from Port Elgin to SouthHampton (another great little town about 5km outside of Port Elgin).
The beach and the sunsets...THIS is what the town is known for! Since it is located on the shore of the cleanest of the Great Lakes the walks and swims are that much more enjoyable. The sand between your toes, the wind in your hair...
The beach will lead you to the town or even through The Harbour. Most folks take out their lawn chairs, or like me, take out their blankets and sit on the sand and watch the sun go down and the stars come out!
Fishing...Walking...Talking...Diving...it's a great place to do it all. It's simple and calming The waves crashing on the side walls while your walking creates a nice mist which is refreshing on a hot and humid day!
The Flea Market
The Port Elgin Flea Market...
Everyone awaits this summer time around there because that's when the original crafters come out from hibernation. The flea market isn't what most are used to. It's a gathering of local and not-so-local vendors. You can find anything from freshly picked corn to beaded necklaces to handmade door stopers. For a small fee of 0.25$ (which is donated to a local charity) you are able to enter and purchase or simply walk around and enjoy the individuality of all the vendors!
One of my favorite past times is walking between the boats that are parked at the harbour. Friends, family all join on this liquid floor and enjoy eachother's company. There are hundreds of boats of all sizes who live their or just pass through.
