Popular Local Customs | Other Local Customs Tips | All Tips (7) If someone invites you to their 'camp', you don't need to bring a tent! In Thunder Bay, a 'camp' is much like what southern Ontarians call a 'cottage', except that there may not be running water and the electricity may be powered by a generator. If you are visiting such a place, you are 'going to camp'.
The place where you pitch your tent is NOT a camp. It is a campsite. If you have a tent, then you are 'going camping'.

Thunder Bay is a multi-cultural town filled with special events and ethnic festivals. We arrived during Harbor Fest one summer and it was a great weekend complete with fireworks, a Jamaican Street band, and a variety of ethnic foods sold from small booths on the streets. Thunder Bay is culturally diverse. You can go into a shopping area & hear many people speaking English or French. You can go to an area of Thunder Bay that is proudly Finnish, with Finnish shops & cafes. It is a town that welcomes culture. Leave a Comment

My favorite store is a small bait store in Longlac, Ontario called Skinner's Acre. It is run by a man by the name of Tim Skinner, and he is wonderful! FYI: he loves to get things from all over the world, so if you can bring him a small gift he would love it. I think he already has license plates from all 50 states and Canada. Leave a Comment

Some unique phrases or terms used in Thunder Bay (will add as I think of them)
Going to "Camp" - This term is the same as "cottage" from Southern Ontario. A vacation house, often on a lake.
"Persians" - A dessert unique to Thunder Bay (I believe). Can be bought at Nuccis deli and is kinda like a donut without the hollow center, covered in pink icing.
"Sorels" Sorrels is a name of boots that are very warm and unfortunately...often necesary during winter in Thunder Bay. Leave a Comment

Thunder Bay has the world's largest population of people with Finnish decent outside of Finland. Because of this, there are some finnish restaurants (The Hoito, another tip) and many people in the area have Saunas in the houses or camps (cottages, summer homes etc...also another tip). A very popular thing to do is to sit in the sauna and then run out into the lake....or if it is winter, jump in the snow...and then quickly run back inside!!! Leave a Comment
