  • Look, the most important thing to remember about Thunder Bay is, it's really bloody cold!

In the winter, with wind chill, you could be looking at a temperature as low as -40C. Make sure you have a _good_ jacket with polar fleece, lined gloves and boots and scarf or ski mask to cover your face and prevent frostbite.
TIP: In drug and convenience stores, you can find patches which can be placed in gloves and boots to create a kind of artifical heat. Great for cross-country skiiers.

In the summer, days can be quite warm (anywhere from 20 to 28 C) but things often cool down quite a bit in the evenings - you'll want a fleece and pair of jeans if you're outside for any length of time.

You'll want bug spray - the mosquitoes and blackflies can be especially bad - but good quality stuff is readily available everywhere.

I've had difficulty renting cross-county skiis. Look into it before you go if you're planning to do some trails.

  • Always take your camera, where ever you go!!! A photo oppertunity is always there when you don't expect it. I never travel without mine :-)

This is one page in a series of many pages about Canada. If you are interested in reading more about this beautiful country, you should take a look at my Canada page.
In the last travelogue of this page you can find an overview of all the pages I have already written and some ideas of what I will start writing about soon. I have listed them by province, starting in the east in Nova Scotia and working my way to the west to Vancouver Island. Here are some pictures from my other Canada pages.

    Be prepared!
I visited in the middle of July which should be the warmest time of year. However it got quite cool in the evenings (i.e. 6 degrees Celsius) so definitely bring pants, sweaters, a jacket as well as shorts and t-shirts for the afternoon when it does warm up. The weather can change really quickly from sunny to stormy so just be prepared!...and bring lots of bug repellant :)

If you like to hike make sure to bring sturdy shoes - many of the trails have steep and somewhat slippery sections that require good traction.

Thunder Bay is surrounded by gorgeous scenery so bring a camera to capture the moment.

The nights are cold and the days are hot, so be ready for anything! If you are going to the falls, make sure that you bring a light jacket as the mist is rather cool.

Definatley bring a camera as there are lots of moose and black bear along the road sides in the early morning hours (5 - 7AM).

We fished for Walleye (pickeral as the locals call it) and Northern (or 'Pike') and had the best luck for walleye with orange and green crawler harnesses. We used spoons for Northerns and had excellent luck as well. (And I think I'm allowed to give advise on this since I caught the biggest fish in camp three out of the four years I was a student on this trip) Boy did that make the guys mad! :)

    What to bring
With Thunder Bay it really depends on the season. Summer is generally quite warm and winter is brutally cold.

    Winter
You will need multiple layers of clothing. A good warm jacket, a fleece, long sleeve shirts. If you are coming from a warm climate it will feel twice as cold.

In the summer shorts and t-shirts is fairly normal, although lately the weather seems to be changing every half hour. So bringing rain gear may be wise.

Fly repellent!! The mosquito is thought to be the areas national bird!
