  • John's Italian Caffe: Great old-school cafe

This place isn't about the food--it's a real cafe in the old world style. A big terrace, a lovely old building with big windows and creaking walls, and tables where you can happily do nothing, read, or talk. Like a real cafe, which, again, ain't about the food. These are rare in Toronto. Even though the town has thousands of patios, these people are always eating or yakking or drinking. They don't know how to use a cafe--sit, relax, do nothing. John's is a great place to just that, on a lovely tinly tree-lined street that seems warmer and cozier in the winter, and shadier and cooler in the summer. The pizza's pretty good. The food isn't as good as it used to be, and it's pretty basic (pizza, pasta, panini), but how many times do I have to tell you that a cafe is not about the food?

Now this cafe is the greatest. It's definitely a local haunt and wonderful because of it's atmosphere, it's location and the fact that it's open 24 hrs! If you're a tourist suffering from jet lag and have no idea what to do with your time while everyone is sleeping, feel free to visit here. Admittedly, it is a trendy place, located close to University of Toronto so the crowd tends to be between their twenties and thirties. The cafe is three floors and each floor has a different feel. They even have a patio that's open in the summers. The prices aren't too bad, reasonable in this city, but most items are home made, and they have the best Irish Cream Hot Chocolate i've ever tasted!

NOTE: Not suitable for kids as there is a bar.

Favorite Dish: Definitely the Hot Bread. The 7 West Hot bread is a bread topped with onions, cheese, mushrooms, and it's OH so yummy. Also their selection of Hot Chocolates. On a winter night with that special someone, don't miss the Irish Cream Hot Cocoa...yum yum. Their homemade soup is pretty good too.
