  • Yamato: Yamato - Totally Rotten

by fieldb Written Oct 3, 2009

Ever had street meat from a sidewalk vendor? Then you're very lucky. Because compared to Yamato, a cheap $2 hot dog is gourmet fare. How bad is this place? It's completely awful. Let's start with the customer service - actually, there is no customer service so if you're expecting even the simplest ease in communication, forget it. Incorrect orders that THEY CHARGED US FOR - and they argued with us that it was OUR mistake. Their staff don't have a deep understanding of the English language - which is fine - but when bring you food that YOU DID NOT ORDER and then insist that you did and REFUSE to take it off the bill, well you've just committed restaurant Hari Kari. And now, on to the food. How bad is their food? Frankly, it could not get worse. We would have had a better meal by wading through the garbage at McDonald's - week old McDonald's garbage. We ordered steak. I have no idea what they served us, but they said it was steak. Our steaks didn't even look like meat, never mind the really bad taste. Vegetables that weren't cooked. Salmon that tasted like it had been caught in the late 70's and tuna that could have easily come from a can. When it gets this bad, salmonella poisoning starts to look good. And for dessert, they gave us a bill which was really the rotten cherry of the whole evening. The fact that we had to pay this ridiculously expensive bill for absolutely nothing, including their errors just reinforces that Yamato is the worst restaurant we have ever been to. This is a really bad review because Yamato is a really bad restaurant. If you're craving fantastic Japanese food in Toronto, there are many other places where you'll have a fantastic meal. If you really want to try Yamato, then do yourself a favor and go when they're closed - and consider yourself lucky.

Favorite Dish: There is nothing good about the food at Yamato.

    Yamato: Great Japanese Sushi

This is one of the best Japanese sushi restaurants that I've visited (and (I've been to quite a lot). Located in the heart of the Bloor-Yorkville district, it's a great place to begin an evening out.

Favorite Dish: The sushi platters. And they have the traditional Nigori sake (the unfiltered kind, served cold). I didn't try the steak, but my companion told me it was excellent.
