Dollar stores are a fun and convenient way to save money. Paper goods like plates, paper towels and toilet tissue are sold at remarkably low prices. I love to wander up and down the aisles and see what they are offering. I purchased a "faux mink" blanket in pink for my mother in law for very little money. It is a great place for gift wrapping paper and sundry items such as toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash. They have a canned goods section as well as a candy section for any sweet tooth. They also carry a line of Canadian Flag items like lunchboxes, hats, and luggage tags.

Excellent deal on postage paid postcards, they are mailable anywhere in the world. We shall see in a few weeks if they were right. I was able to purchase a hat for Hansi (waaleweiner) for $3.00 CAD and they had some tapestry doilies for a $1.00 each.

For the post paid post cards $2.00 CAD this includes International postcard mail. Most items are between $1.00 to $11.00. Stock may vary from store to store so check back.

Yonge Street is supposed as the longest street in the world at about 1900 km. In Toronto the street offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants and cafes. There are mostly boring chain stores and cheap souvenir shops at the beginning of the street, therefore it is a very touristy area. But further away from the centre in the university area Yonge Street is home to interesting small shops with second hand stuff like books or CDs.

Just short before my 2007 Toronto trip I was alarmed by this CdnJane misc. froum entry:

    Closing of an institution

Posted: Thu May 31, 2007 03:56 AM CEST

One of the landmark music shops/stores of Toronto is closing at the end of June. Sam the Record Man has been around for 70 years, but the Internet downloads of music has put them out of business.
I know that I've taken a couple of VTers there - Roy (Imaniac), Suet & Jacob a couple of years ago, and I'm sure that Pieter-Jan has found his way there too. Sam's has fought the arrival of HMV, and many other chains, but just can't compete with what is available online.
Most people who have seen pictures of Yonge Street in downtown Toronto have, whether they knew it or not, seen pictures of Sam's - the big neon record disks high up on the building.
Sam the Record Man (named for co-founder, Sam Sniderman) was the place where you could ALWAYS find that record (vinyl, cd, casssette, laser-disk, and latterly videos, and dvds) that you really had been searching for, forever. It was the place that carried all the CHUM Chart music, and CKOC's playlist, and CFTR - when those were the radio stations of the 1970s to listen to for the Top 40.
The first cruise I was ever on back in 1969, Sam's brother Sid and his wife were on board - I thought they should've called the chain Sid the Record Kid - and that was exciting to meet that kind of celebrity.
Talk is that there are people wanting the sign at least to be kept nearby as a historical feature, or perhaps the building turned into a music museum.

I had visted the Halifax shop already, but Toronto's SAM was still on my list. I never had thought I was going to visit this landmark just a good week before final closure!
