The CN Tower offers a commanding view of the surrounding landscape that is Toronto. After paying the usual fee, you clamber aboard an elevator, and then the elevator car shoots up to the observation platform. Be forewarned, the elevator is on the outside of the tower structure, so the view through the glass might give you vertigo! There are displays which give the history of the tower, and compare it favourably against other tall structures around the world. There's also a hole in the floor! OK, not really...it's a spot where the floor is transparent glass, and you can see down or step on the glass and then look down, all the way down. This, I could not do. The CN Tower is located a short walk from downtown and Union Station. | | | | CN Tower: Seems silly but..... | | | | | |
The CN Tower really is worth it if you are in Toronto on a clear day! (from a plaque I found stuck on the ground in the vegetation near the tower: see photo 3) For 25 years, the CN Tower has maintained its status as the World's Tallest Building and Free-standing Structure. It continues to define the Toronto skyline, porvide a critical element of the nations Telecommmunications infrastructure and delight Torontonians and visitors with its spectacular view, entertainment and restaurant facilities. In honour of the 25th anniversary of the CN Tower, Mayor Mel Lastman, City of Toronto issued an official proclamation declaring June 26th, 2001 to be "CN Tower Day". This milestone was one of many in the continuing history of the CN Tower. It began with an imaginative vision by Canadian National Railways and the Government of Canada for a tower that would demonstrate the strength of Candian industry. That vision reached fulfillment when the Sikorsky helicopter, nicknamed Olga, lifted the 44th and final piece of the CN Tower's antenna into place on April 1, 1975 making the tower the World's Tallest Free-Standing Structure at a height of 1815 feet and 5 inches or 553.33 metres. Later, the Guinness Book of World Recores officially renamed it the Worlds' Tallest Building and Free-Standing Structure. In 1995, the CN Tower was recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The CN tower is a must-see. the lift takes 60 seconds, and the speed at which it returns is the same speed that a parachuter travels at when he ' falls' out of a plane! Each lift trip has a guide who are extremely knowledgeable and will distract you from the floor rushing away from your feet with other top tips! When you get to the top there is a restaurant and areas where you can go outsied (v windy) but by far the best is the glass floor, I had just completed a balloon trip when i went here ,and thought i coud handle it, i took one step and my legs turned to jelly! (matt couldnt even do it!) It can hold 8 hippos but still it seems like you will fall through!
