 | | | | Casa Loma: Casa Loma Details | | | | | |
Casa Loma is the former estate of Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, a prominent Toronto Financiar, Industrialist and Military man. Sir Henry engaged the architect E.J. Lennox to help him realise a life-long dream - the creation of a "medieval" castle on the brow of a hill overlooking Toronto. Begun in 1911, it took 300 men nearly 3 years to complete, and cost $3,500,000 at that time. Sir Henry enjoyed Casa Loma for less than ten years before financial misfortune forced him to abandon his castle home. Casa Loma is owned by the City of Toronto and has been operated by the Kiwanis Club of Casa Loma since 1937. Photo Joan Johnson Leave a Comment Address: 1 Austin Terrace, Toronto. Ont. ...of the former estate of Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. This dude was a famous Toronto financier, industrialist and military man. Apparently he had enough money to realize a life-long dream - the creation of a medieval-style castle on a not too large hill overlooking Toronto. Construction was started in 1911 and it took almost 3 years to complete the castle. Unfortunately, Sir Henry could enjoy medieval life at Casa Loma for about 10 years only. Then, sadly, financial misfortune (one too many poker games with the knights?) forced him to abandon his castle home. Canada's most fabulous castle boasts lavishly decorated suites, secret passages, a Castle-of-Adventure-style tunnel, towers, stables, and beautifully landscaped gardens. Some say Casa Loma is the winter week-end home of the Blue Ghost Blues Band, although I've never seen them there. Other interesting castles can be found in Baden-Baden and Ebersteinburg, Germany, in Seal Beach, California, and in Kenilworth, UK. A historical landmark in Toronto is something you don't come across often, after all everything in the city seems to be new, specially in the downtown area. However, you'd be surprised once you step away from the downtown core a bit. This interesting castle is located a little further away from most tourist attractions in Toronto, however it's worth a visit if you have the time. For information regarding ticket prices to see the interior of Casa Loma please see the website below.
