Casa Loma - 1 wing of the building by joanj Casa Loma is the former estate of Sir Henry Mill Pellatt, a prominent Toronto Financiar, Industrialist and Military man. Sir Henry engaged the architect E.J. Lennox to help him realise a life-long dream - the creation of a "medieval" castle on the brow of a hill overlooking Toronto. Begun in 1911, it took 300 men nearly 3 years to complete, and cost $3,500,000 at that time. Sir Henry enjoyed Casa Loma for less than ten years before financial misfortune forced him to abandon his castle home. Casa Loma is owned by the City of Toronto and has been operated by the Kiwanis Club of Casa Loma since 1937. Photo Joan Johnson Leave a Comment Address: 1 Austin Terrace, Toronto. Ont. Casa Loma by Trillian2005 ...of the former estate of Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. This dude was a famous Toronto financier, industrialist and military man. Apparently he had enough money to realize a life-long dream - the creation of a medieval-style castle on a not too large hill overlooking Toronto. Construction was started in 1911 and it took almost 3 years to complete the castle. Unfortunately, Sir Henry could enjoy medieval life at Casa Loma for about 10 years only. Then, sadly, financial misfortune (one too many poker games with the knights?) forced him to abandon his castle home. Canada's most fabulous castle boasts lavishly decorated suites, secret passages, a Castle-of-Adventure-style tunnel, towers, stables, and beautifully landscaped gardens. Some say Casa Loma is the winter week-end home of the Blue Ghost Blues Band, although I've never seen them there. Other interesting castles can be found in Baden-Baden and Ebersteinburg, Germany, in Seal Beach, California, and in Kenilworth, UK. Leave a Comment

Garden View of Casa Loma by Viajara Casa Loma is the former estate of Sir Henry Pellatt, Toronto financier, industrialist, and miltary man. The castle was designed by architect E. J. Lennox who also designed Toronto's Old City Hall. Plans for the castle were drawn up in 1911. The castle took three years to complete at a cost of 3.5 million dollars. The castle is beautiful inside and out. Be sure to allow enough time to thoroughly tour the grounds. The gardens are lovely. Where comfortable shoes and cool clothing in the summer. Touring the castle and especially the turrets can be a real workout! There is a cafeteria in the basement if you need a bite to eat. Leave a Comment

Casa Loma by Blatherwick Casa Loma, meaning "House on the Hill", began construction in 1911 for Sir Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. The house that looks like a castle cost $3.5 million, and took a team of 300 workers three years to build from start to finish. Upon completion in 1914, at 98 rooms, it was the largest private residence in Canada. Notable amenities included an elevator, an oven large enough to cook a steer, two vertical passages for pipe organs, two secret passages in Sir Henry's ground-floor office and three bowling alleys. Many of the rooms were left unfinished, and today serve as a small museum for the Queen's Own Rifles, which Pellat supported. Admission costs about $12 Cdn and it is open daily 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Leave a Comment Address: 1 Austin TerracePhone: (416) 923 - 1171Directions: By TTC: Dupont station (Spadina- University line) and walk north two blocks on Spadina Ave. At this point, climb the Baldwin Steps (110 steps) at Spadina Ave. and Davenport Road or walking up the hill on the west side of the castle.Website: www.casaloma.org

Casa Loma by vladlitvinov Ok, first of all, I have never been inside the Casa Loma. Therefore, I can't really comment on its interiors. The buiding is already interesting as such, I mean, from an architectural point of view. So, it's already worth to be seen, no matter if you go inside it or not. Casa Loma is a real life medieval castle. It was built in 1911, by Sir William Henry Mill Pellatt, a prominent financier, industrialist, and military man. Sir Henry Pellatt earned his riches by building the CPR to the west. He used his earnings to build the first Canadian hydro generating station at Niagara Falls. In 1905 he purchased 25 residential lots on top of the Davenport Escarpment, and hired architect Edward James Lennox, designer of the city’s most prominent buildings, including the old city hall, to build his castle, what is now Casa Loma. It took three hundred men nearly three years to build Casa Loma, at a cost of $3,500,000, which at that time was an unprecedented amount of money to pay for a home. Sir Henry enjoyed his dream home for less than ten years before mounting debts forced him to turn Casa Loma over to the City of Toronto.
