Casa Loma can't be missed, even if you tried. Perched atop a hill in the north end, Casa Loma draws thousands of visitors each year who look up and proclaim, "It's a castle in the middle of the city!" Casa Loma was built by Canadian financier Sir Henry Pellatt to fulfill his childhood wish for a castle. His dream took three years and $3.5 million to complete. After World War One, Sir Pellatt lost his fortune and was forced to auction off his prized possessions, including Casa Loma in order to pay off his debts. For years the stately house sat unoccupied while the city tried to decide whether to tear it down, or turn it into a museum, high school, art gallery or veteran's home. Finally in 1937, the Kiwanis Club of West Toronto suggested turning Casa Loma into a tourist attraction. Today, Casa Loma is owned by the City of Toronto and is still operated by the Kiwanis Club of Casa Loma. It is one of Toronto's top attractions Leave a Comment

Casa Loma is the former estate of Sir Henry Pellatt, Toronto financier, industrialist, and miltary man. The castle was designed by architect E. J. Lennox who also designed Toronto's Old City Hall. Plans for the castle were drawn up in 1911. The castle took three years to complete at a cost of 3.5 million dollars. The castle is beautiful inside and out. Be sure to allow enough time to thoroughly tour the grounds. The gardens are lovely. Where comfortable shoes and cool clothing in the summer. Touring the castle and especially the turrets can be a real workout! There is a cafeteria in the basement if you need a bite to eat. Casa Loma was a beautiful place. Though while we were there they were doing renovations on one side, so not all the pictures were very nice. They also had a wedding going on, so it did made things crowded, but we walked around the outside a bit and they did have a wonderful grounds. Directions: Casa Loma is located at One Austin Terrace near the corner of Davenport Rd. and Spadina Ave. (from their website)Website: http://www.casaloma.org/

Casa Loma, meaning "House on the Hill", began construction in 1911 for Sir Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. The house that looks like a castle cost $3.5 million, and took a team of 300 workers three years to build from start to finish. Upon completion in 1914, at 98 rooms, it was the largest private residence in Canada. Notable amenities included an elevator, an oven large enough to cook a steer, two vertical passages for pipe organs, two secret passages in Sir Henry's ground-floor office and three bowling alleys. Many of the rooms were left unfinished, and today serve as a small museum for the Queen's Own Rifles, which Pellat supported. Admission costs about $12 Cdn and it is open daily 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Leave a Comment Address: 1 Austin TerracePhone: (416) 923 - 1171Directions: By TTC: Dupont station (Spadina- University line) and walk north two blocks on Spadina Ave. At this point, climb the Baldwin Steps (110 steps) at Spadina Ave. and Davenport Road or walking up the hill on the west side of the castle.Website: www.casaloma.org
