Casa Loma: Casa Loma
We visited the Casa Loma, a beautiful building overlooking Toronto, which was built by Sir Henry Pellatt. Sir Henry Pallatt was born in Kingston, Ontario on January 6, 1859. By the age of 23 he became a full partner in his father's stock brokerage firm, from that time on known as Pellatt and Pellatt and after predicting that East Canada would become a sought after area to live by Canadians, went about buying as many shares in the area as possible (Nobody agreed with him at the time). he went on to earn millions as the east coast developed. He worked with Thomas Edison and began the Toronto Electric Light Company and brought electricity to Toronto. He was also one of the group of men who decided to capture the power of Niagara Falls to open the first Canadian hydro-generating plant. As well as being an astute business man, Sir Henry was also in the Canadian 'Queens Own Rifles' and with his own monay, paid for the troops to travel to Europe to take part in the Military Parade. His wife, Lady Pellatt was the first COmmissioner of the Canadian Girl Guides. Sir Pellatt began to build the 'House on the Hill' so that he could entertain the rich and famous and also royalty. Unfortunately, do to same major problems with his businesses, he became bankrupt and the house was never completed. Casa Loma was given to the city of Toronto and restored for all to see. It really is a sad tale of a man that gave so much to the city of Toronto, becoming bankrupt, and even having to sell off the late Lady Pellat's wheelchair to pay the debts. I would definitely recommend going to see the Casa Loma and wandering around the secret passages and beautiful rooms.

    Casa Loma: Casa Loma
Well I saw this place from the outside. I tried to sneak in but I was too late. The last people are admitted at 4pm and I got there about 4:45pm. All I can say was that Casa Loma looked great from the outside. I wished I could have enjoyed more of it. Maybe next time. This place was alittle further and we took the car to get here. After 5pm people schedule wedding receptions and other parties here. The location is great and the gardens (what I saw of them) are beautiful.

Casa Loma: X-men was filmed here
Yep, Casa Loma was used as the school for 'gifted' children in the X-Men movie. I really wish I could scan the pics I have for this place. It was so beautiful and so peaceful. It was a very nice change of pace from the rest of the city. We really enjoyed the audio tour of the building and then just relaxed in the gardens afterwards. Well worth the $12 that we paid to get in.

  • Directions: Take the subway to the Dupont station, then walk north about two blocks. There is a very long, high stairway up to the castle from there. It's a nice view of downtown once you reach the top!
