CITY HALL. The Toronto City Hall was the result of a world-wide architectural competition won by Viljo Revell of Helsinki, Finland and the building opened on September 13, 1965. Unfortunately, Revell died before the opening, so the city dedicated a Commemorative Column to his memory that stands on the grounds. Bummer.
In addition to providing the usual municipal services to local residents, Toronto City Hall is also a popular tourist attraction. Located just outside of City Hall is Nathan Phillips Square ....a popular entertainment complex offering free concerts, ice skating, and the annual New Year's Eve celebration.
A new building with Finnish architecture was built in 1965 to house city hall. Despite its size and modernity, the complex has a superb harmony and good taste.
On our walkabout, architecture took to the fore. City hall was impressive. I really wish I found out more about the history, but, we were on a swift move.
A vibrant square in the city. Close to the famous Eaton Center shopping mall. Crowded all day long and home to manifestations and celebrations.
It was inagurated in 1.899 and in 1.965, when the new City Hall was opened, it became a courthouse for the Ontario Government.
This is a beautiful place to sit and rest up from a walk. A nice reflection pond, arches, a church. Katmosphere has an incredible pic of this same spot on her Toronto homepage. Go check it out.
The Freedom Arches were constructed in 1989 and contains a piece of the Berlin wall. This area is a nice place to visit.
The city hall consists of two office towers, the East and West Tower. If you go for a helicopter ride over these buildings, it looks like a giant eye.
For three weeks in Dec, there is a wonderful firework every sunday night in front of the BEAUTIFUL city hall building. It looks so great. Before the firework, the circus is also deserved to see!
Looking over Nathan Phillips square, not all that spectacular, but there's an ice rink on the square in winter, and this is also where the Winterfest is held.
Ice skate at CITY HALL in Winter. The fountain-pool behind me will be frozen & turned into an ice-skating ring in the freeeeeeezing Winter!
Look for the different Moose around town!
Each one is different. My favorite was this moose on a diving board! Oh! And the one in front of CN Tower was cute too!
