events / festivals: Toronto International Film...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Toronto International Film Festival (annual - Sept.) A few hundred thousand film-goers attend this week long festival with hundreds of films from around the world screened. Mostly of them are the non-Hollywood, yet have high-production values comparable to Hollywood. However, the gala screenings in recent years have been Hollywood star-studded events and world premieres of big-budget films are not uncommon. Other festivals in the same league: Cannes, Sundance

events / festivals: Visit the CNE
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Canadian National Exhibition has been a traditional part of Toronto for over a hundred years as it was established in 1879. It's held the last few weeks of the summer and closes on Labour Day in September. Enjoy the Midway with it's rides and games and stuff yourself in the Food Hall, my favourite part, it's filled with food from all over the world. Try the Tiny Tom donuts, little round donuts fresh out of the oil and coated with icing sugar. They are divine when still warm. There's always a lineup at this booth. A big part of the EX (as it's known) is the annual Airshow which is held at the end of the Exhibition. Planes from all over the world attend and you can watch them do their maneuvers over Lake Ontario. For those who love to shop there are exhibit halls with vendors from all over plying their trade. Everything from food to furniture to handbags and jewellery. General admission tickets are $12 but you can also visit Ontario Place with this ticket during the EX, children 13 and under are $8. There's a walkover that leads you directly into Ontario Place. Tickets for rides on the Conklin Midway are extra.

    events / festivals: Caribana
  • Tip Rating:
  • Caribana is one of the highlights of summer in Toronto. It is a fantastic display of Caribbean music, costumes and (my favourite) skin. Happy faces are everywhere for the entire week of this festival, which has its climax with the annual parade of fleets.

events / festivals: The Santa Claus Parade
  • Tip Rating:
  • Starting in Christie Pitts, and criss-crossing down to Front and Jarvist streets, the annual Santa Claus parade in Toronto is the longest in the world. Lots of fun for both the kids and the adults. Just make sure to wear warm clothes... it can get really cold...

events / festivals: Fergus Scottish Festival and...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games Bagpipes competitions and massed bands, highland dancing, international competition in heavy events (tug of war, caber toss, hammer throw), live celtic music, Celtic music workshops and jam sessions, clan gatherings, haggis, a beer garden, thousands of vendors selling all things celtic, thick Brogues (some genuine, some fake), and thousands of pasty-white people with red hair. This is a serious Scottish festival in the middle of a really lovely rural Ontario town. People come from all over the world to take part in it.

events / festivals: High Park and Shakespear in the Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • High Park is the largest park in the city and one of the largest city parks in the world. Much like Manhattan's Central Park, it has walking/hiking routes, playgrounds, playing fields, flower gardens and greenhouses, restaurants, a pond, a zoo, and well just lots to see and do. If you are visiting in the summer months (July-August) Shakespeare in the Park is a great activity to make your trip to High Park complete. Every summer on Tues-Sat night at 8 pm you can see a selected Shakesperian play at the ampitheater under the starlight sky. If the weather is good this is a great thing to do to get fresh air and see some reasonably cheap theathre. Suggested price is $15 (pay what you can). 2004 play is "As you like it"

  • Address: High Park Ampitheathre.
  • Directions: Take the Bloor Subway Line to Hig Park Station and follow the signs.
