The cars are the fastest ones you will see in Toronto! Don't blink! It took me a few tries to get this shot and the car is still blurry.

    events / festivals: I'd suggest using toronto.com...
  • Tip Rating:
  • I'd suggest using toronto.com to check daily what is going on in Toronto. Like any large metro area, the talent is always changing. Caribana is a fun event during the summer, also the Toronto Jazz Festival runs for a week, The Royal Winter Fair in the fall, and the many cultural and sporting activities during the winter. There is always something you will ejoy in Toronto. More like THESE activities. Don't forget to enjoy ROM (Royal Ontario Museum), Roy Thompson Hall (everybody from Oscar Peterson and Tony Bennett to Evgeny Kissin). Rock and blues groups constantly infiltrate the Queen St. W area. Plan using toronto.com and you will really enjoy yourself.

  • Directions: Addresses and descriptions on how to get there are easily obtained using toronto.com
  • Other Contact: Again, use toronto.com for telep

  • Tip Rating:
  • The Gay Pride Parade is held in Toronto on during the end of June. Although it's not as great as the one in New York during Halloween, it's still worth visiting. Even if you're not in town during the parade, if you have time (and it's warm outside), go hang out on Church St. (in the area just north of Ryerson University) - you'll have fun.

events / festivals: The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE)
"Let's go to the Ex!" The Canadian National Exhibition (called "the CNE" or "the Ex" for short) has changed very little since my childhood--except now they don't give away free stuff on opening weekend like they used to. It used to be they'd give you small pieces of dinnerware, keychains, toys, mementos, and food samples. But everything else is still as I remember--the latest midway rides/games, horse shows, animal and agriculture displays, stuntmen performing, colourful stage acts of international dancers and musicians, a food pavilion large enough to get lost in, furniture and wares imported from far away places, hundreds of artisans displaying their handicrafts, interactive sports displays, and a nightly fireworks show to finish off the evenings. In 1878 an agricultural show which toured to a different Ontario municipality each year came to Toronto. It was such a success in Toronto that a permanent annual exhibition called "the Toronto Industrial Exhibition" was established the following year on the current site of the CNE. It is now the oldest annual fair in the world! It grew with the times to include technological and automotive displays. A contact was awarded to Conklin Shows in 1937 to operate a midway of rides and games. The CNE is open for less than a month annually--from mid-August to labour day weekend in September. Please check their web site for exact dates. If you plan on taking some midway rides, make sure you buy your tickets online in advance and purchase the "Magic Pass". It gets you express entry at the CNE gate and you'll save money after taking only two or three rides. The site is fairly large so make sure you wear good walking shoes! Do not miss: "Heritage Court", "Art, Crafts, & Hobbies", "Farm, Food, and Fun", and "Scadding Cabin" (Toronto's oldest house, built in 1794).

    events / festivals: Caribana
Caribana is probably the most popular festival in Toronto (rivaled only by the Taste of of the Danforth). The festival is a tribute to Caribbean culture that are so prominent in the multicultural flavour of Toronto. It is held on over the last week of July into the the Simcoe Day weekend, which is the first weekend of August. The festival was begun in 1967 by the local Trinidad community rand has since become one the most important Caribbean festivals in North America. Caribana brings in 750,000 to 1 million tourists into Toronto and usually fills up the hotels. There numerous parties around town during the festival but the highlight of the event is the huge parade that is held on Lakeshore Boulevard on the Saturday of the Simcoe Day weekend. The parade has many colourful floats and bands and is quite spectacular. Naturally the event draws a massive amount of spectators. So much so that until 2007 I have been avoiding the parade but that year I decided to see the parade and take some photographs. The parade crowds were not quite so unmanagable as I thought they would be. My major complaint about the proceedings is that the parade moves very slowly. I stood in the crowd for almost two hours and I think the floats advanced but 500 meters during this time. So be patient if you visit. Also bring suntan lotion and a hat. Toronto can get very hot on this weekend, something that surprises foreign tourists.
