Windsor has the privilege of hosting the 47TH INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN"S GAMES.
In June, 1968. Celje, Slovenia hosted the first games, which were initiated by its founder, physical education teacher Metod Klemenc, who believed sports could unite youngsters of different nationalities.
This year, Windsor welcomes 1500 athletes - boys and girls ages 12 to 15 - along with their coaches and family members, and representing 84 cities and over 30 countries. The athletes will be competing in eight sports - Athletics (Track & Field) - baseball - basketball - gymnastics - Soccer - Swimming - Tennis - Volleyball. The venues are scattered throughout the city of Windsor and includes Forest Glade Arena - gymnastics - McHugh Soccer Complex - soccer - Mic Mac Park - baseball - and the brand new $78 million Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre. The Centre boasts 900-seat upstairs bleachers and giant screens which provide results at the end of each race. China won the very first gold medal at the new complex.
The ICG President is Torsten Rasch and Co-Chairs are our very own Mayor Eddie Francis and Essex Warden, Tom Bain.

Hans and I attended this wonderful event. Athletes and fans could sample various ethnic cuisine and enjoy a colorful show including native Drummers, a Chinese Dragon and many cultural dancers and musicians, sponsored by the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County. A large selection of ethnic food could be purchased for $2.00 to $6.00 - Pizza slices - sausage on a bun - salads - Chinese dishes - Mexican dishes - Greek - Croatian - etc.
We really enjoyed being part of this amazing event. The weather was perfect and we had the Detroit River and Skyline as a fabulous backdrop.

    Cross Country Skiing

by windsorgirl Written Feb 16, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It is difficult for me to find inspiration to venture out of door during the winter months, except, however on those beautiful crisp days with a fresh layer of clean white snow and bright blue skies as pictured here. We generally don't receive alot of snowfall here in southwestern Ontario, but when we do, I try to get out before it melts for some cross country skiing. My favorite spot is Malden Park. If you don't ski, bring the kids to the toboggan hill or the dog for a walk in the bush.

A fun winter activity for the entire family is ice skating. In downtown Windsor, there is a free outdoor skating rink at Charles Clark Square.

The rink is open from 10am to 10pm daily from December to March, weather permitting. There is also a concession stand here so you can warm up with a hot chocolate afterwards.

Walk Cycle or Canoe at Point Pelee

by windsorgirl Written May 30, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are many sports activities to enjoy at Point Pelee National Park.

Bring your bike and you can cycle from the park entrance to the tip. There are also many short paths to walk, nothing too strenuous....great for families.

You can walk around the boardwalk pictured here and look for frogs, turtles and birds along the way. At the boardwalk you can also rent a canoe and paddle through the marshes.

And lastly, the Point is surrounded by water so there are many beaches for sunning or swimming. Do not, however, swim near the Point, there are dangerous currents here. Pay attention to the posted warnings.
