If you are a serious birder than you already know about Point Pelee. It is a small spit of land that extends south into Lake Erie. It is the perfect rest stop for birds that are migrating south in the autumn. They will spend time refuelling here before attempting to cross the lake. What you may not know is that monarch butterflies also use the Point as a resting spot on their migration back to Mexico.
The Park is open year round, but the visitor centre is only open on weekends from Nov to March. The best time to spot birds is May, there are many events planned for novice and experienced birders.
The highlight of our trip to Windsor and Essex County was the several hours we spent in Point Pelee National Park. This is an outstanding venue for watching birds and butterflies, especially during spring and fall migration. We also enjoyed the preserved historic sites and several hiking trails, such as the marsh boardwalk trail, pictured.
Point Pelee is THE must-see spot when visiting the Windsor area. Visit Canada's southernmost point, a "tip" of sand that extends into Lake Erie. The Marsh Boardwalk is also a neat area, snaking a path through fields of bullrushes. Depending on the season, you may be able to observe birds and monarchs resting during their migrations.
