The two primary ways to travel between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, is either the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel or the Ambassador Bridge. Our preference is the bridge; the views are much better.

At the time the bridge opened, April 16, 1930, it's 1,850-foot-length spanning the Detroit River made it the longest suspension bridge in the world. Though now surpassed by longer and more famous bridges, It is still an impressive sight.

Toll for the bridge is $2.75 American or $4.00 Canadian. Expect a short delay for a security check at the border. For us it has taken anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes. A passport or proof of citizenship may be required.

    VIA RAIL CANADA
  • Tip Rating:
  • Located in the Walkerville area of Windsor, VIA RAIL CANADA connects Windsor with London and Toronto, Ontario.
It's been years since I've taken "the train". The last time it was with my neighbour as we were going to Toronto to see "Riverdance" which was playing there.
The Train Station is located in East Windsor. From Ambassador Bridge, make your way to Riverside Drive East and follow until you reach Walker Road. Turn right and the station is on your left. From the Tunnel, turn right, then turn left on Goyeau, drive until you reach Riverside Drive and then turn right and follow the "Drive" until you reach Walker Road. Turn right and the station is on your left.

    Car, truck whatever
  • Tip Rating:
  • Seems like you could use whatever you needed to use to get around. I don't think a motor home would fit in the parking garage. But there's a lot of parking on the streets in the winter nights before 7pm we noticed

    Drive Carefully!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Like the Motor City across the way, Windsor is similarly built around car culture. Apart from downtown, shopping revolves around big box stores and some areas don't even have sidewalks! Maneuvering through the streets can be tricky due to a couple of reasons. First, there's a high volume of transport trucks, especially 'round the bridge and tunnel areas. You may find yourself boxed in by semi's during rush hour. Secondly, the drivers are HORRIBLE. People constantly run yellow and red lights, so watch out!

    Driving from the US
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you drive into Canada from the US you can either go over or under the Detroit River, I chose over and went over the Ambassador Bridge going both ways. You have to pay a toll, either in Canadian or US Currency (currently $4CAD or $3.75US), and pass through customs where they ask you a couple of questions and usually wave you through.

I avoided rush hour both ways by coming in around 7 pm on the way in and leaving around 11 am going back, I only waited for 1 car on the inbound trip and 5 or 6 on the outbound trip. We saw quite a truck backup on the bridge around 4 pm which is the start of rush hour.

    Tunnel bus
If you do not have a car, like me, take the tunnel bus instead of TAXI. Run by Canada, cost 2.75 either US dollar or Canadian dollar for a single journey.

    Windsor Airport
Windsor Airport, (ICAO CYQG, IATA YQG), is located immediately southeast of the city of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The airport serves a mixture of scheduled airline flights and general aviation, and is a popular point of entry into Canada for private and business aircraft. The airspace above the airport is exceptionally busy because of the proximity to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, and IFR arrivals and departures are handled by Detroit approach control.

The airport originally opened in 1928 as Walker Airport, named after Hiram Walker, a 19th century whiskey distiller.

There is scheduled air service provided by Air Canada Jazz, as well as seasonal charter flights through Sunquest (operated by Skyservice) and Conquest Vacations, in addition to general aviation traffic.
