The Magic of Lanterns, at the Chinese Garden of the Montréal Botanical Garden ,
is an event that I always like to roam around in. As many other Montrealers, who also come here to admire the lanterns that are fabricated in silk, by the same artists in Shanghai, year after year, in a garden which is the result of bonds forged between the Parks Department of the City of Shanghai and the Montréal Botanical Garden. It took 50 Chinese craftsmen, in 1990-91, under the direction of Le Weizhong, a renowned architect and master landscaper and the director of the Shanghai Institute of Landscape Design and Architecture, of that time, to assemble this traditional garden inspired by the private gardens popular in the southern Yangzi River region during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). This year's theme was In the Kingdom of the Birds.

In a nutshell, it takes away some of the blues that the end of long warm days brings along. Being such a beautiful and peacefull place in the middle of the city. I suggest to come during week nights, since there are many people during the weekend.

It's an event that occures every autumn. This year, 2005, it was from September 9 to October 31. And they are then open from 9AM to 9PM.

    Adjacent to the botanical garden

    Bugs

Adjacent to the botanical garden can be found the Insectarium. Founded a few years back by a funny bug lover, it represents years of his insects gathering throughout the planet. Talk about a traveler!!!
It also hosts live insects all year in a reproduction of their habitat. In fall each year, both the botanical garden and the Insectarium hold a tasting spree where you can taste all kind of plants (that's ok) and all kinds of insects (whoops!!). The event is very popular.
