 | Montreal Nickels Reviews | Tips 1 - 7 of 7 | | It was only when I came to writing up this tip that I discovered that Nickels is in fact a relatively recent phenomenon dating back from the early 1990's when Celine Dion started the group. With its formica topped tables in their booths, the neon lighting and the mid-century bric-a-brac I honestly thought that this was one of Montreal's institutions - just shows that appearances can be deceiving. And of course on hindsight it really is rather obviously tacky modernity masquerading as authenticty - of course it's obvious, isn't it?? ;-p Anyway, authentic or otherwise, the Nickels here in the middle of the main Montreal Downtown shopping area was pretty busy on a sunny Saturday afternoon but we were seated promptly and just caught the 2 pm deadline for Marina'a bacon and eggs. Service was excellent, polite, friendly and swift, the atmosphere buzzy and despite how busy the place was everything was clean and organised. Yep, I for one was very impressed with Nickels.
My nice simple smoked meat sandwich was piled high with tender and tasty meat and accompanied simply with coleslaw and pickle. Washed down with a 6 buck pint of Molson fulfilled exactly its required task of filling the gap created by the couple of hours of culture wandering around the almost neighbouring Musee Des Beaux Artes. Marina's "wake-up" breakfast was equally satisfying. Nothing clever, just the simple things done well and relatively inexpensively too. Nickel's Diner chain. This is a small 50s type diner in Canada (mostly Quebec) and a few in Florida. It's great, fun, inexpensive, and the service is really good. The jukebox plays music-for a nickel a spin-from old favorites to new hits. The walls are covered in memorablia, and the staff wear vintage costumes, even poodle skirts!
The James Dean- a bacon-cheeseburger and fries. The menu items are all named for icons of the 50s and 60's, except for one important exception. Celine Dion (we're fans, can you tell?)was once a partner in the chain, and the decadent chocolate tower cake still bears her name. Many of her family members still own locations, you might be lucky enough to meet a few! Yikes, don't know if its my fave. The food is kinda average and all but I guess you have to check it out at least once: Celine Dion's Diner, Nickels. This place is more of a fond memory I think- Jen (Jennifer_W on VT) and I used to go here when we were too lazy to cook. We always had the same great waitress and there was always the same lazy bartender/manager that talked on the phone all night while our waitress ran her ass off for us. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Le restaurent à Céline!! Céline Dion's chain of restaurants!!
Again a deli with the 5 cents smoked meat sandwich or 10 cents spaghetti when you buy one at regular price, ample of calory-filled low quality dessert too. This is a typical american style dinner place - it reminded me of what the cafeterias looked like in the 60's and in old American movies. They serve things such as hamburguers, salads, fish & chips, chicken fingers, etc. Prices ok, service somewhat slow but fine.
Good HUGE milkshakes, and nice cheesecake too! Leave a Comment Theme: AmericanPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Rue St. Catherine, in front of Eaton CenterDirections: They have other locations, too!
