Santropol: A bit overated... but still out of the ordinary
What makes the notoriety of this cafe/sandwich joint is the unexpected sanwich mixes and its fresh torrified/ground coffee. One will find a great assortment of surprising sandwiches made with only fresh and original ingredients, such as buckwheat, mint, hazelnuts or pecans. The extremely wide variety of coffees, herbal infusions and teas are what keeps on bringing back its down to earth "nouveaux bourgeois" clientele; French people will be happy to find here, the famous "à la French" soda/sirups in mint, cherry, banana flavours, etc. All can be enjoyed inside or on the backyard's terrase when weather permits it; call before showing up on week ends, as it gets very crowded.
Favorite Dish: Their famous Santropol sandwich: Roast beef, blue cheese, cream cheese and spices and they lay on the ingredients pretty thick!
Santropol: don't go here
This place is horrible! don't waste you time going here, unless your broke, and love globs and globs of cream cheese on everything you eat...ham...roast beef...pickles you name it! Don't let their website fool you either, it gives the impression of a beautiful restaurant with organic teas (which were unavailable??), garden etc... but that was a long long time ago, it is now a sad little dump.
Favorite Dish: the ice water.
Considered one of Montreal's quintessential restaurants to bring someone on a first date, we went to Santropol after we had explored St Laurent on a very cold (-20 degree Celsius) evening around the trendier parts of downtown. It wasn't our first date, but it was still our first night together in Montreal.
Santropol is a bit of an institution in Montreal. Most locals have fond memories of many times spent here. Often frequented by students, the restaurant is located in an old house in the Plateau neighbourhood on the east side of Parc Mont Royal. Its style is part Art Deco, part beatnik, with that homey, cozy, eccentric-artsy atmosphere. It's a restaurant where everyone is welcome.
Favorite Dish: Santropol is well-known for its sandwiches, and this is the item that dominates the menu.
Even though we had just ate an enormous appetizer platter an hour before at another restaurant, we shared the Hazel Brown sandwich at Santropol. It looked too good. The Hazel Brown was made with very thick slices of fresh brown bread smothered with cream cheese, chocolate and hazelnut spread, fresh bananas, honey and fresh leaf lettuce. It was sooooo good, I even ate the garnish of fresh fruit, pickled banana peppers and red cabbage!
With our sandwich, we shared a pot of Humani-tea (humani-thé) herbal tea. It was so comforting on such the cold day. They describe this blend of tea as "Cinnamon and cloves woven through a tapestry of camomile and peppermint: A soothing digestive suggesting conversation and philosophy." Amen!
Santropol: My favorite Montréal meal
Santropol was, by far, my favorite meal during my stay. The dark wood bistro-type establishment with seating in their terraced garden has a loyal following and came through recommendation. Santropol makes their own bread, although only one type – which is a hearty, moist, sweet, dark bread - sliced thick. The menu is dominated by sandwiches and boasts some very unique combinations. Many have a flavored cream cheese as a main ingredient. Try the off menu specialty – the ‘Santropol.’ They also have a great selection of teas and coffee drinks. Prices were exceptionally reasonable, the portions were generous, and my service was superb.
Favorite Dish: The Santropol - a roast beef and cream cheese sandwich with special seasoning. Try the Santropol take on a cafe-au-lait.
Santropol: HUGE sandwiches and exotic tea blends!
I got to know this place thanks to VT member rwaksberg, who invited me to a meeting he had organized here with some friends & acquaintances of his (more details in my travelogue!!).
I must say they have some weird food in here... sandwiches are their specialty, but not just regular sandwiches... They have strange mixes of organic and healthy ingredients & dressings stuffed between 2 slices of bread, most of them sweet & sour (or sweet & salted?), which I confess is not my favorite kind of food. So it was hard to find something that sounded really appealing to me, but I finally got to pick a sandwich and it turned out to be really good.... and ENORMOUS! There were so many things inside that it was tough to get to bite it! But I made it through the end and ate it all!
Their other specialty seems to be TEA, mostly hot (I wonder if they serve iced tea in the summer time???), and with many different herbs and flavours inside (there are single flavour choices as well).
One of the girls at the meeting told us that this restaurant was well known for having one of the prettiest terraces in town, where people love to sit at and have dinner or a cup of tea and chat. We didn't get to see it cause it was still early spring and the weather was really cold, but I guess she said they even won an award due to this unique feature. So it looks like it's a place worth the visit, and not only for its food!
Favorite Dish: The Santropol sandwich, with roast beef and goat cheese and other stuff inside, was really good.... nothing sweet in it, either! Satisfying, fresh and healthy, I do recommend it. I wasn't the only one who picked this sandwich and the others liked it very much too.

Santropol: Sandwiches with love
Santropol is my favorite spot for sandwiches, and i mean big great healthy creative sandwiches. Near the mountain (Mont-Royal), there is plenty of choices for both vegetarians/vegans and meat lovers. With one of the best terrace in the neighborhood, time stop completely here in this quiet heaven.
A must try for everyone walking by.

Santropol: Great sandwiches!
This place was in full throttle when my mom was at university...and still is, more than ever! Straight from 1970, it's "granola" style, in all it's glory!
And It's one of the most fun places to go and have lunch!
You can also go in the evening, but as a meal, they only serve sandwiches (thick ones), two types of salads and a vegetarian home style chili.
It serves both vegetarians and non-vegetarians.
What I love about it, is that you feel a bit like you just entered the Weasley's house. But the best part is the fenced garden in the back. It is a small and fairy-like oasis in the middle of the city.
They even put lamp heaters so to prolonged the period during which it can be used.
Opening hours: 11h30 to midnight every day.
Favorite Dish: My favorite is the "Santropol" sandwich,
containing roast beef, blue cheese (I love blue cheese!) and cream cheese, with some mysterious spices, on thick and moist whole wheat bread. (I'm not sure if you can have white bread instead, but think that I've heard it offered.) As you see, I'm not a vegetarian, even though I do like to eat that way quite often.
They also have great house blends of tea.

Santropol: Super Sandwiches and Divine Desserts
A local took us here and said a lot of McGill students frequent the place. Great art deco atmosphere. Two blocks from all the happenings on Saint Laurent. The sandwiches are creative, delicious, and overzealous in serving size. However, for me the best was the dessert!!! I split a fruit pie slice and chocolate cake and both were out of this world!!

Cafe Santropol: Bigass Sandwiches
This is a very popular and inexpensive restaurant hidden in the heart of Montreal's Plateau district. Santropol is best known for their massive sandwiches and array of vegetarian food. The ambience is mellow and funky, and in the summer you can sit in the beautiful garden overflowing with greenery.

Santropol Cafe: Cafe
This is an amazing little cafe with a beautiful inside decor and fantastic terrace in the back open in the warmer months. You eat next to a gorgeous garden and japanese pond complete with the fish. The food is light and healthy and different. Check this cafe out on the way to or from the Tam Tam Festival which is held in Mont Royal park every sunday in the summer.
Favorite Dish: They have huge double decker sandwiches, great cakey desserts and a fabulous salad with huge, fresh vegetables.
Santropol: Great chilli and back garden
Santropol is just one of the most unique places one can eat at in MTL. Aside from the crazy sandwiches which are their specialty (thick slices of soft black bread and crazy combinations of fruits, vegetables and meats), they also have a great chilli which they sometimes run out of, but for good reason - it's very filling and cheap, great for those on a budget. But that's not why one goes to Santropol - in the summer, it's all about the garden in the back, and at all times it's the homey and eclectic decor inside. A MUST.
Le Santropol: Le Santropol
Very nice place to go, and the have coffee that isn't made by exploited children... A nice terrasse, good food, tisanes, charming, quiet, veggie. Go on their website and check the History of the Café, and their photo album (you'll see the Café was an old house of Montréal).
The vegetables usually all come from their own garden.
Favorite Dish: Any Cream cheese sandwich.
Nice place to finish an evening (close at 1 AM on week-end) in a super hospitable ambiance, a little granola. Serving also vegetarian food, fair trade organic coffees, herbal teas, etc...
