Bonsecours Market: Not a Market, It's a Mall
  • Tip Rating:
  • A variety of stores, but it's not a market atmosphere. I was looking for a market!!!
This is more of an indoor mall. If you're in old town, you may want to stop, but not a must-do activity.

    Kind of expensive, too.

    Downtown: ‘Underground City’ Shopping
  • Tip Rating:
  • Montreal is famous for its complex of underground tunnels linking buildings, in particular the shopping centres. When winters are freezing, shifting things underground away from the weather does indeed seem to make eminent sense – as well as being rather unique. So we just had to experience this for ourselves.

According to the information we received, the ‘Underground City’ now takes in 33km of connecting passageways and links over 1700 boutiques and businesses. That isn’t hard to believe, because with our lack of local knowledge we soon were … um … lost! Undaunted, we pressed on, finding some shops selling the goods we needed (more summer clothing).

While we did our shopping though, I came to the realisation that our ‘above ground’ shopping malls are equally windowless – so the experience of shopping underground felt very like being at home. And, interestingly, the Montreal shopping complex in the photos even had a glass dome over the top, through which trees were visible (photo 2): that was definitely less claustrophobic than usual in a ‘standard’ shopping centre!

    Lush: Handmade Soap
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is not a picture of cheese, believe it or not!! You will be fascinated by these soaps, they smell great and are made naturally. You can also get bath fizzies, and even gels you can freeze and use as soap (what a morning eye-opener, huh?).

soaps are sold by weight, and tend to be expensive.
    Worth the splurge!

Old Montreal: not old montreal prices
  • Tip Rating:
  • this is a gift shop based in Old Montreal without the Old Montreal prices..mostly souvenirs to bring back home..but not one single tacky souvenir in the place...mostly Jewelry, wine accesserios, tableclothes, sushi sets etc..lots of local artisans..some things are over priced..but most is reasonable.

they will gift wrap anything you buy..just ask its free of charge..I buy stuff for myself all the time and get it gift wrapped..my favorite item they carry is vases...I have one now for every room in my house and my desk at work..if you are reading this get on it send flowers..Joke

Beware the taxes: Shopping in Montreal
  • Tip Rating:
  • All products and services have 15% taxes. except food that has none, and books that have only 7% (candies and stuff has 15 %taxes) And usually the taxes are not included in the prices shown, so beware! In restaurants you have to add to the price seen 15% for the taxes and 15% for the tip, if you don't give tip, they will be mad at you!

    Downtown: Downtown Shopping
  • Tip Rating:
  • Every city has its popular shopping districts. In downtown Montreal the place to go is famous Rue St. Catherines (Street).

Though it runs a great distance east & west, the most popular stretch is between Atwater on the west and St. Laurent on the east.

You should also be aware that underneath much of the central area of this strip (between Stanley and Aylmer are a series of interconnected underground shopping malls. They're especially nice to go in when it's -15C or colder outside!

St. Catherines has an enormous variety of stores of every kind imaginable, from huge department stores to the smallest boutiques.

It also doubles as a "cruising strip" for young men and women in their fancy cars!

    Shopping in Montreal: Shopping Streets
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rue St. Catherine has all kinds of shops, especially mens/womens clothing and department stores as well.

St. Denis has funky, artsy boutiques~~I loved the shops on this street. The street itself is very quaint, with 2-storied stone buildings, very cute!

Chabanel District: Amazing Factory Clothing Deals!
  • Tip Rating:
  • On my mom's recent trip to Montreal she seized the opportunity to visit the famous Chabanel Shopping District. This is an area of clothing factories in North Montrea where one can purchase women's clothing, men's clothing, children's clothing, shoes, sheets, towels, even wedding dresses!

You can only shop on Saturdays between 8am - 12 noon.

I had heard the deals were good but nowhere close to what my mom and her other friends reported. Deals of 10% - 20% of the price (NOT just 10 - 20% off!) are not unheard of. When I met her later she was just stunned at how inexpensive everything was. Yet absolutely top quality.

Some places take credit cards but it's best to take a few hundred dollars in cash.

    Euro-Deli Batory: Authentic Polish Food
  • Tip Rating:
  • I only discovered this delightful Polish deli/restaurant in late 2003. They offer a number of different items including several types of perogies. These are much better than anything you can buy in a supermarket.

A little bit less expensive than most food shops

IKEA: The Best in Swedish Shopping!
  • Tip Rating:
  • IKEA Store in Boucherville - Montreal
    IKEA Store in Boucherville

IKEA is world-renowned for its style in home furnishings. When you live in New Brunswick, Canada these stores are not easy to reach since the one in Halifax, Nova Scotia shut down a few years ago. Although Montreal already had an IKEA shop on the west-side near Dorval airport, we were surprised to see a brand-new store on the east side of Montreal as we drove into the city along Autoroute 20 from Quebec City. IKEA has to be experienced - it is hard to describe! They have a great way of displaying their wares and looking after their customers - it must be where Wal-Mart got their idea of customer satisfaction!

OK, I will have to confess - I drove my wife out to IKEA during one of my lunch breaks and she had a great time getting all the items that she had on her 'to-buy' list. This also included a few items from our daughters for things that they wanted as well ! In my defense, I did do some shopping in IKEA Ottawa once!

I was pleasantly surprised at the total price of only US$170 for an afternoon of 'freedom shopping' !
