 | Montreal Sports Travel | Tips 1 - 10 of 63 | | When you are in Montreal you won't miss the Big O or Olympic Stadium. It's home to the troubled Montreal Expos. Depending on when you see this tip you may want to verify they still play in Montreal. There has been all sorts of trouble with this team however they will always be my favorite. I can remember the good days of Tim Raines, Andre Dawson, Denis Martinez, Tim Wallach, Andres Gallaragha and Vance Law! Whether the Expos are still there or not drop in for the building alone or some other events might be happening.
On December 4, 1969 - just months after the close of the Expos' inaugural season at Jarry Park - Montreal mayor Jean Drapeau officially nominated the city as host for the 1976 Olympic Games. On May 12, 1970, the International Olympic Committee announced its decision to award the Games to Montreal. The quadrilateral was brought back to life. On February 3, 1973, the Olympic Games' organizing committee took the first critical steps toward the construction of the myriad of venues. On April 28th, excavation work began on the Olympic Park. As the months went by, construction progressed steadily, but in May 1975, the workers' union went on strike and did not return until the following October 26th, at which point the project was months behind schedule. On November 20, 1975, the Quebec National Assembly adopted Bill 81, which saw the creation of the Olympic Installations Board (OIB), a committee whose task it was to oversee the completion of the Olympic Park. By May 15, 1976, it had become necessary to create several temporary installations for various facilities due to the delays in the construction of the stadium. Though Olympic Stadium was still unfinished, it was unveiled to the world on July 17, 1976, for the opening ceremonies of the 21st Olympiad. Olympic Park was officially inaugurated, yet it was still far from complete. Nevertheless, the public demanded that the facilities be used immediately following the investment of their tax dollars, and so, on September 26, 1976 - a month and a half after the Olympic Games - the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League helped redefine Olympic Stadium as a venue that would be home to a wide variety of sporting and cultural events. If you're visiting Montreal and like playing beach volleyball then there's a place for you! Now, so you don't get disappointed, it's not exactly at a beach but it is on sand. Just East of Mont Royal (just across Park Avenue) is Milton Park. You'll see it as you leave downtown heading south on Park (du Parc en francais). It runs throughout the summer between 12 noon and 9pm. Anyone can drop-in. The cost is just $2 for the day.
Just bring a lot of drinking water and your suntan oil! Leave a Comment

Come and see the country's best jockey's race in this beautifull hippodrome! Recently renovated, it look very nice! You can even eaty while watching the race at the Centaur restaurant which is very good! Sometimes there are fairs here or rock shows. This is also where most pre-fight (boxing) training and press conferences are held. Leave a Comment

People in Montreal (and Quebec City) seem to be crazy about bicycling, there are designated bike lanes on many of the streets and wonderful bike paths. You'll see people biking in the parks as well and plenty of places to lock up your bike. A couple of places where bikes can be rented are CaRoule-Montreal on Wheels, 27 rue de la Commune est near the Vieux-Port or Velo Montreal, 3880 rue Rachel est. CaRoule also rents roller blades. According to the guidebooks there are 200+ miles of bike trails, if you rent a bicycle they can probably give you a list of some of the better places to ride or you can find some maps on the their websites. Baseball is part of the american way of life. It is not easy to understand all the rules for Europeans, but it is quite funny to watch the Americans following their sport by drinking beer and eating Hamburgers... Hockey's the # 1 sport here and the city's own hockey team Montreal Canadiens have done pretty well in NHL. Unfortunately, the poor players making only 5 billion a year are on strike because of the plans to reduce their salaries so that's why no hockey games can be seen this season. But when the league starts again, be sure to go and see a match! The feeling among the spectators is amazing, especially on the cheapest sections high up. Go habs go!
Just bring your voice and make sure to use it! And cheer for Saku Koivu ;) (he's Finnish!) Leave a Comment Theme: Sports WatchingAddress: Bell Centre, downtown, rue de la GauchetièreDirections: Metro orange line, stations Bonaventure and Lucien-L'AllierWebsite: www.canadiens.com

The Montreal Canadiens are the most storied hockey team in the NHL. With 24 stanley cups to their credit, the mystique that surrounds this team is infectious. If you are in town during October-March, pop by the Bell Center and go see a game. Cheap seats are about $50. But its a great stadium and there are no real lousy seats
Nothing special. Montreal is cold in the winter, so whatever you where to the game will be plenty Leave a Comment Theme: Sports WatchingAddress: Bell Center. (formerlly known as the Molson CenterDirections: Take the metro. Its the best way
