 | Montreal Sports Travel | Tips 31 - 40 of 65 | | If you are a true sports fan you may want to visit the Old Montreal Forum former home of the Montreal Canadiens. Rather than tearing it down as have gone so many great old stadiums they have turned it into a Pepsi Forum Entertainment Complex and it now houses what I am told is the largest movie complex in the province as well as a Jillian's were you can eat, drink and catch some sporting events on TV along with some high end retail stores. The coolest part is that a portion of the Forum seats were preserved and center ice was recreated as it must have looked in the Forum's heyday. In the Forum there is also a statue of Canadian hockey god #9 Maurice "Rocket" Richard still sitting on the Forum bench.....Very Cool Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Ok, so the Expos as a team have a bad rep. The positive side to this is that it was easy to get tickets to a game at the last minute. We had to show our Aussie friend this typical North American sport! If you enjoy baseball games -- and don't care TOO much if the team isn't the best -- go. The atmosphere is fun. It's a typical baseball experience - beer, hot dogs, goofy mascots. We had a great time! Leave a Comment Theme: Other

The Montreal Canadians moved out of the Old Forum on St-Catherine street, corner Atwater, back in the 90's. Ever since then they've not won a stanley cup...coincidence? I think not. The old Forum could seat about 17,000 people so they built a new arena to seat 21,000 - while the Bell Center is sold out every game the team itself has sucked the massive goat wangs ever since they moved to the Forum (and Patrick Roy leaving the team didn't help either). The old Forum is now a....mall....gah...the balls these people have to desecrate a shrine like the Forum. It also has a movie theatre in it with 23 screens in it, which ironically enough is the mount of stanley cups won in that building. Gah. Pisses me off. So if you are a hockey fan, and want to pay tribute to one of the legendary rinks of the sport, then be prepared to see a mall. Bah. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: Metro Atwater.

When in Montreal, if you have the chance, try to catch an Alouette football match in the McGill field. I say try, because tickets are hard to find. The experience is amazing! The local teams is much loved and cheered, the animation is unstoppable and the ambiance is over the top. The small stadium and friendly players make this experience quite unique. First down... Montreal!

Sturgeons can be found in the Montreal area at the beggining of summer. Many locations are good, we have a few we like best. This time in late june, we caught a huge sturgeon at around 10 pm in the Longueuil Marina area. I know it was 10 pm because the fireworks in La Ronde was just starting and we fought our big fish during the entire show (you can even see an explosion in the background of the pic!)... After that, this big mama went back in the water and on with her life! Another great fish found in the Montreal area is the Alose, salmon-like fish. They are very fun to catch, mostly in Gouin bld and Carillon area. It's a happening for fisherman as they only come for a few days a year.
Sturgeon need big rods and baits, rod holder, frontal light and warm cloth since you fish at night. Alose can be capture on the shore (boots, basket, hat, sunscreen...) or in the river (boat...!). Leave a Comment Theme: Fishing Trips

The Grand Prix du Canada, held at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit on Ile Notre Dame in Montreal, is one of the most beautiful circuits on the Formula 1 schedule. With the Montreal skyline in the background and the St. Lawrence River surrounding the track, there could not be a better setting for a race. The race is held on a weekend in June. Practice and qualifying are held on Friday and Saturday, and the race is held on Sunday. Controversy began in 2003 when it was announced that the Canadian Grand Prix was dropped from the schedule starting in 2004, but all was saved when public outcry urged Formula 1 to reconsider. Tickets can be purchased on the website. If you want to sit in the grandstands, you must buy tickets for all 3 days of the event. Prices for seating in the grandstands range from Cdn$195 to $440. General Admission can be purchased for all 3 days for $90 or for individual sessions (race day is $60). The bus or metro can take you to the circuit. I would recommend the metro, but prepare for a very long wait either way.
Sunscreen is a good idea. It can get hot. Bring plenty of water. Wear comfortable shoes because you will do more walking than you wish. Get there early, especially general admission ticketholders. Buy or bring earplugs - these cars are LOUD. Also, if you are not familiar with the drivers, buy a program so you know who is who. Baseball is part of the american way of life. It is not easy to understand all the rules for Europeans, but it is quite funny to watch the Americans following their sport by drinking beer and eating Hamburgers... The Montreal Expos play in the Olympic Stadium which was built in the 1970's to accomodate the Olympics. While the Expos havn't been too bad lately, noone seems to care in Montreal, and attendence is always low. Everytime I have gone to the stadium I have seen nothing but empty seats. The stadium itself doesn't have the right ambience for baseball, it's more like watching baseball in a basketball arena. But the good thing about visiting the Stadium is that it's pretty cheap by American standards to get some good seats and take in some Major leage action. I would not suggest buying any food at the stadium though, it's overpriced, and low in quality. If you stick around after the game, it is possible to meet the players and get their autograhps. The lines aren't even that long since noone goes to the game.
