Canadian Grand Prix
Every year, usually during the first half of June, the Formula 1 circus stops in Montreal. We nearly lost the race a couple of years ago, but we managed to hold onto it, and it is more popular than ever!
There are many racing-related activities during the week preceding the Grand Prix. Most of the action takes place on Crescent Street, where you will find exhibitions (i.e. Porsches), merchandise stands and outdoor shows, as the street is closed to traffic to make way for the festivities.
Tickets for the race go fast, so you must purchase them in advance. Likewise, make your hotel reservation beforehand; I used to work in a downtown hotel, and every room had already been booked for the weekend when I came in to work on the Friday before the Grand Prix.
Equipment: For the race: bring sunscreen, earplugs and binoculars.
For Crescent St.: bring money!! The souvenirs can be expensive, not to mention the food and drinks in the bars and restaurants with a view on the festivities.
Formula 1 Air Canada Grand prix
The Formula 1 Air Canada Grand prix is the biggest sport event of the summer in the city and one of the biggest among all the formula 1 grand prix in the world.
During 3 days Montreal is the capital of the F1, Montrealers and lot of visitors from all over the world go out and enjoy the many events that are organized esepcially arountd Cresent street, Peel street in downtown and in Notre-Dame island.
If you are attending the race or you want to go to Notre dame island just for visit, you better use the metro (very easy), avoid the car because the trafic is huge and it is very very crowded.
For the second year, the organization of the event open the race circuit thursday to the public so you can direct access to the different F1 teams, see how the mecanicians assembly the cars, see some pilotes ..etc an interesting event!
Equipment: it can be very hot..
Gentlemen, start your engines. The only Formula 1 race in Canada, and boy, does this city rock! In a way...this event starts the summer season.. In mid-June of every year, the Grand Prix packs them in. One weekend of racing at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Ile Notre-Dame in the Saint Lawrence River and a week of celebrations in the streets of Montréal.
Equipment: The companies bring their Formula 1 machines and their drivers and their mechanics. The city provides the race track, the bleachers, the street parties and the atmosphere. You just bring your money and your sunscreen. Hopefully you won't need your umbrellas.
Formula 1 Grand Prix
The Grand Prix du Canada, held at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit on Ile Notre Dame in Montreal, is one of the most beautiful circuits on the Formula 1 schedule. With the Montreal skyline in the background and the St. Lawrence River surrounding the track, there could not be a better setting for a race.
The race is held on a weekend in June. Practice and qualifying are held on Friday and Saturday, and the race is held on Sunday.
Controversy began in 2003 when it was announced that the Canadian Grand Prix was dropped from the schedule starting in 2004, but all was saved when public outcry urged Formula 1 to reconsider.
Tickets can be purchased on the website. If you want to sit in the grandstands, you must buy tickets for all 3 days of the event. Prices for seating in the grandstands range from Cdn$195 to $440. General Admission can be purchased for all 3 days for $90 or for individual sessions (race day is $60).
The bus or metro can take you to the circuit. I would recommend the metro, but prepare for a very long wait either way.
Equipment: Sunscreen is a good idea. It can get hot. Bring plenty of water. Wear comfortable shoes because you will do more walking than you wish. Get there early, especially general admission ticketholders.
Buy or bring earplugs - these cars are LOUD. Also, if you are not familiar with the drivers, buy a program so you know who is who.
Experience the Grand Prix!
The F1 Grand Prix is a huge event in Montreal. Nothing like watching it from a TV screen, the race is really something to experience! The noise, the smell of rubber...and the incredible amount of people! Be sure to arrive in time (and still be prepared to wait for a loooong time) and do not come by car, you'll never make it!
Equipment: Sun lotion, water bottles and a hat - really important! Ear plugs might be a good idea too if you can't stand the noise. And unless you wanna spend a fortune on the hot-dogs and drinks, bring a lunch with you.
Formula One Grand Prix Air Canada
Grand Prix Air Canada is the most important race in Canada. During the last week-end of June, the Saint-Helene island is the place to be. During this week-end, the city's nightclubs and bars have special events and it is the week-end for the car exposition events.
