Probably one of the more prominant festivals during the summer in Montreal. There is SO SO SO much to do. Most of St. Denis is blocked off for pedestrians during mid-July when this festival runs.
There is a parade at the start of the festival and after that, the factastic floats are parked alongside the street so festival goers can take upclose pictures of the floats. Last year there was Pewee Herman, Charlie Chaplin, Austin Powers, Mr. Bean and so many more.
They also have some free performance shows and a giant video screen showing episodes of Just For Laughs Gags. There's facepainting, giant games (chess, checkers, etc.), a merchandise store.
If you can, make sure to get tickets for one of the Indoor or Gala shows. They are absolutely fantastic! Tickets are only about $20 CAD and well-worth it. We saw the "Late Nite Down Under" show featuring comedians from Australia and New Zealand. Try to book early because they go fast! My friend and I wanted to see the "Asian Invasion" show but it was already sold out a week before it showed.
Just For Laughs Festival 2008 runs from July 10 - July 20. Some of the paid shows may run outside those dates though.
This comedy festival has been going strong for 25 years! There are many indoor and outdoor shows. If you plan to attend one of the shows, please purchase your tickets ahead of time. People come from all over the world for Montreal's festivals, and tickets go fast. If you did not buy any tickets, you can try and win some from the radio (good luck) or check out the free shows. The festival runs each July
The comedy festival is yet another in an abundance of things to do during the summer months. In my opinion though, it is my least favorite festival.
During the festival, they close down a section of town around St. Catherines for the free part of the festival. If you walk along the street you will see everything from comedians to movies to hypnotists to people playing human sized chess games.
The best part of the festival is the fact that it brings in some top names in comedy. Although I didn't see them, Bill Cosby, Drew Carey and John Cleese performed. I went to see the gala with Jason Alexander as host. Some of the comedians were really great and well worth the ticket price. Just get your tickets early as they sell out fast.
Come laugh all day, evening and night as the Just for Laughs Festival kicks off its 22nd edition, from Jly 6th to 30th (Outdoor from July 14th to 24th). One will have the possibility to enjoy great names of the humoristic scene such as jerry Seinfeld, Dame Edna, Jim Belushi and many more others, at the St-Denis theater, with prior purchase of tickets. But lots of free shows and activities will also be available starting July the 14th... on the Festival's streets themselves. The gigantic outdoor game parlor, karaoke evenings, dance contest on the streets, the "Twins and Triplets" parade, spontaneous choirs and street buskers' shows are only a few of the free agenda's list of thing to see and do. Do not miss the Off Company's giant red girafs parade, beginning on the corner of Ontario St. and St-Denis St. on July 19th, 20th and 21st at 21h00, simply sublime! This festival is a favorite of children who simply love its parades and street buskers.
Usually around the third week in July the Just for Laughs Festival hits the streets and nightclubs of Montreal. Book tickets online or when you arrive into the city. General admission tickets are typically in the $30 us dollar range .
Whatever your sense of humour, the Just For Laughs Festival is guaranteed to have something for everyone.
Walk the 'village' on St.Denis street for free outdoor shows, catch a stand-up act at the Old Port or a battle of improv at the Medley. The festival is meant to enjoy, so have fun, bring the family, a friend or go alone, you will be entertained.
Those Just for Laughs Gags you see during flights....they take place in Montreal over the summer! I feel horrible when I laugh out loud b/s there is always someone near me that seems to be sleeping...oops!
