Another festival you can experience for FREE in Montreal is the Fireworks festival. It is an international competition so the creativity and quality is second to none.
I saw a few performances in 2006 and my favorite (I may be biased) was the United States. It was amazing and went along perfectly with the music. They won the gold medal for that year, France the silver and Australia the bronze.
The best view that I have found: **Go to Papineau metro and follow the crowds. There is a split in the road where you can go left or straight. Go straight and continue under the bridge. Try to get as close to the river as possible. You should be able to see some of the fireworks on the ground.
Usually held Saturdays and Wednesdays at the end of June/July.
International Fire Works Competition (Le Mondial SAQ)
There are not too many places that get to see 4th of July fire works twice a week, all summer long, but Montreal is one of those places thanks to the SAQ World Fire works competetion. There are plenty of places where you can check out these fire works for free. They usually shut down the Jacques Cartier Bridge for a few hours during the nights of the fire works so people can get a good watch up close and high up.
This summer from June 15 to July 27, a fireworks performance will be shown each week by a different country. The countries competing are Japan, Portugal, Belgium, Austria, Caanda, United States, Italy, and France. Three years ago when I was living in Montreal during the summer, I caught a bunch of these fireworks competitions during the Benson & Hedges Symphony of Fire, and they were absolutely spectacular. These are seriously one of the best display of fireworks you will ever see! This summer, I'll be able to catch the July 13th performance by Canada.

Held at the amusement park La Ronde, this is the best display of fireworks I have ever witnessed! Accompanied by music, several countries compete against eachother throughout June and July every summer. It is fantatique!
