ATM Fraud (Automated Banking Machine)
  • Tip Rating:
  • My friend who also signed up as a new VT member has wrote me in an e-mail explaining that she just happen to be a victim of ATM banking fraud. If you have a moment, please read her statement to prevent this uncomfortable experience like her. I post her e-mail integrally here to share with you and hope this little thing could prevent you from being victimized of personal bank machine account (ATM) robbery by malicious individuals.

    Due to limited words can be posted here, but need to tell you all a bit more so please go here or get the link below to read the complete story.

    Safety or not: A few unsafe areas
  • Tip Rating:
  • Montreal may be generally regarded as a fairly safe city and I believe it is, but not unlike any other major city, Montreal does have a dark side and there are several areas that I would reccomend that tourists stay away from.
    1. Ste Catherine st. between Atwater and Guy. Drug use and dealing has increased dramatically in this area and it's a huge problem. It's not a very dangerous area but if you can avoid it, do so, especially Cabot Square.

    2. East of St. Laurent st., downtown Montreal becomes fairly seedy and dangerous, especially near the gay village and Papineau St. There's plenty of drug use and prostitution.

    3. Finally, try to avoid the Parc Extension and lower Cote Des Neiges areas (especially around Victoria st.) as they are not unfamiliar to gang violence.
    Nonetheless, Montreal is a great city and I wouldn't live anywhere else. Just use common sense when you're walking downtown and you'll be fine.

    Watch your head :-)
  • Tip Rating:
  • I put this tip under warnings or dangers all in good fun. You can see from this picture that there are lots of pigeons in the old town area and you should watch your head or you could get crapped on :-).

    In all seriousness though I put this tip in here because I love it in the cities when there are lots of birds flying around.

    It adds to the atmosphere and character of the city!!!

    Driving/Parking: Do not rent from Advantage Rental Car
  • Tip Rating:
  • I’ll start with the inconvenience factor, this is one of the few car rentals companies that is not located at the airport, in fact no one was quite sure where they were, someone said they were in a house about 1 km away, our shuttle driver was the one that finally delivered us to the Hilton near the airport where they were located. They also close earlier than the other companies, by the time our delayed flight had landed at 11 pm, it was already closed.

    But the real reason I’d not recommend them is that when we went to turn in our car, my 5 day $161 US rental turned out to be $266 CAD or $239 US. Now by my calculations, $161 US should be about $179CAD at current exchange rates. So when we asked what the extra charge was for there was $8.95 CAD per day for mandatory liability (OK that was in the fine print). So now I’m at $201US, what’s the other $38 for? The best I can figure from the explanation I got was that they charge their customers at a different exchange rate based on what the credit card charge them. We offered to pay them in cash. They said they don’t take cash. We had to catch a plane. So we signed, very unhappy.

    Do yourself a favor and don’t rent from these folks.

    Driving/Parking: Pedestrians in Quebec
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you visit Montreal, you will undoubtedly notice people jaywalking. However, you should never do this, you risk getting a fine, and more importantly, Montreal drivers don't stop or even slow down for pedestrians. We are very nice people on the whole, just not behind the wheel!

    Also, on Montreal island you can NEVER make a right turn on a red light, however, outside the island you generally can, unless you see a sign stating otherwise. The bridges are the busiest in Canada, if you must take them during the day, 1-3 pm is the best time.

    Finally, if you are coming from the West (I-87 or 89), DON'T DRIVE IN THE FAR LEFT LANE near Pont Champlain. You'll get hit by an oncoming bus! There are signs, but they're vague.

    Safety or not: Bad neighbourhood and safety in Montreal
  • Tip Rating:
  • Montreal is a safe city in general. You can normally walk alone at night without any danger, even though it is safer to walk on main bright streets at night.

    The only bad downtown neighbourdhood that I dont recommend walking thru at night is the red light district (Around Ste-Catherine street and St-Laurent Blvd) just because its not nice and there are alot of crazy people, drunks, prostitutes, drug addicts, pimps and drug dealers...however, it is not that dangerous as there are alot of cops in the area and its very busy with people all the time.

    But like any city, anything could happen...so use your judgement and intuition...if you dont feel safe, better hop in a cab! :)

    Other bad neighbourhood outside downtown are NDG, Cote-des-neiges, St-Michel, RDP and Montreal-Nord.

    Safety or not: Safety
  • Tip Rating:
  • Montreal seemed to be a generally safe city and although we did see quite a few beggars and homeless people, none of them were aggressive. As with all big cities, watch your purse/wallet/ backpack/camera on buses and the metro, my sister in law had her wallet stolen on the metro in Montreal. If you are renting or driving a car, don’t leave your luggage sitting out in plain view and lock your doors.

    Driving/Parking: Especially for Europeans...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Please get informed on the driving code in North America before you hit the road anywhere in Canada. I'm not affraid for us but mostly for you...
    For example we do not stop right under the traffic lights but right before the white street line, which is way before the intersection!
    The one-way sign is a white arrow on a black board, although not very evident, please be on the lookout.
    Also... we do not have it as a habit (although we should) to stop at pedestrian yellow crossings lines... if you do so where there is no red traffic light, you might just end up getting smashed into from the rear.
    One last thing... when you see that cars are all parked in the same direction, that might be because it is the way to park, even if you got the parking spot at the last minute or couldn't miss the opportunity... you'll get a parking ticket for parking "tête-bèche".

    Language: Circulation
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be careful with some signalisation pannel:

    Stop= Arret
    Bridge= Pont
    Highway/Expressway = Autoroute
    Downtown=Centre-Ville
    Exit = Sortie
    Street/Avenue= Rue/Avenue
    Blvd= Boul.

    The speed limit is in KM/H, not MPH.
    ALSO, BE CAREFUL WITH NO PARKING IN MONTREAL, it's very confusing

    Driving/Parking: Dont turn right in a red light!!!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Montreal and New York are the only cities in North America than you cant turn right in the red light.

    In large suburb like Longueuil and Laval, you can only if 50% of the intersection. Watch for the sign.

    Be careful because the police tickets are expensive (something like 150$ for this infraction)
