Carnaval de Quebec: Carnaval de Quebec # 6 - Cree of Quebec
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you have followed any of my pages across the north you will have seen many different aboroginal groups featured so when I got to the Carnaval and saw the Cree exhibits I was delighted to go to that section of the carnaval and explore around.

I would encourage you to spend some time at this part of the Carnaval as well.

Here I added some more pictures so you can follow the link below and see the special travelogue.

So there is more to the Carnaval that just games and Bonhomme :-)

Normally when you think of rafting you think white water but in Quebec they think of a big hill and white snow :-)

For just a couple dollars Canadian you could plumet down this hill with some friends in a raft.

By the sound of the yells it is a fun experience. Once again I wonder about the wind chill but they all survives so just dress warmly :-)

Carnaval de Quebec: Carnaval de Quebec # 3 - Ice Sculpture Competition
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of the main reasons I always wanted to see the Carnaval was for the famous international ice sculpture competition. I thought I read that they would be available to see at the start of the carnival. When I got there this is what I found.

Very large chunks of snow with nothing started. Then over the course of two days I saw plenty of sculptures slaving at these chunks of ice as they carved them into works of art.

I didn't get to see the final product :-(

So if you are keen on this as well, be warned they may not be ready for the first few days of the Carnaval.

Although I didn't get to see them finished it was nice to be around the atmosphere as the different teams worked hard building them. The efford and techniques used was interesting to see as well.

When you get to Carnaval you will see that the events are a little spread out around the city, the entire city is really in Carnaval mode.

But I want to highlight you to Place D'Youville or Quebec Hydro Place as the sponsor in 2005.

This is where there is public skating and in 2005 I missed the Calgary Flap Jack Breakfast.

But as you can see from this picture it is a beautiful area during the night time to visit, with all the lights and ambiance of the Carnival.

You can rent skates there as well if you don't have any.

Carnaval de Quebec: Carnaval de Quebec # 4 - Child Safety
  • Tip Rating:
  • At the Carnaval there are a lot of kids and I noticed the ones in groups where all hanging onto a specific gadget making it easy for chaperons to keep track of the kids.

I thought it was a great idea. I think like in any mobs you need to keep good track of the little ones.

I beleive Quebec to be as safe as a place can possible be but it would be easy for a kid to simply wonder away here with so many distractions and you will have a hard time tracking them down with all of them wearing so gear, so be careful and find your own technique for keeping track of the kids :-)

After traveling the north a lot I found this carnaval activity to be a little hilarious but people doing it where having a blast.

It just doesn't seem natural to have fish placed in a tank to be caught.

If you really want to go fishing its much better to get yourself out on a pond or lake, drill a hole and go for it -)

Carnaval de Quebec: Carnaval de Quebec # 1 - The basics!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Ok so let's start with my tips of the world famous Carnaval de Quebec. Of course there is a gift shop as you see in the picture and Carnaval souviners can be found everywhere but this lady was nice enough to pose with two things that the real hardcore Carnaval goers have with them.

The Trumpet for making lots of noise and a plastic cane that is traditionally used to put the famous local drink "Caribou" in.

These are two things you might want to have with you :-)

I guess by now you are getting the feel for the types of activities that are at the Carnaval.

Here in this picture is the giant soccer game. This was always popular I enjoyed watching the games when they were there with the megaphone.

The Quebec Winter Carnival has gained international fame over the years through its renowned key figure, Bonhomme Carnaval. Celebrity personality of the celebration, Bonhomme is a recurring figure during all the activities. He is the living incarnation of the snowmen that have enchanted Quebec children for generations. Bonhomme Carnaval is the ambassador of this celebration to foreigners, and is the symbol of the festivities of this joyous period of the year. Bonhomme proudly wears the traditional red hat and belt. Bonhomme was conceptualised in 1954 and since 1955, date of the first annual edition of the Carnival, has personified the joie de vivre associated with this winter celebration.

I only got to see him once and there was a flood of kids getting their picture taken with him so this is the best I could do :-)

Carnaval de Quebec: Carnaval de Quebec # 2 - Effigy for access!
  • Tip Rating:
  • To get access to all of the Carnval sites you need to purchase a pass they call the thing you get an Effigy.

In 2005 during my visit it was $7 CDN.

Here is a picture of the one I had. Just tie it on to your coat and security will let you alone for the rest of your trip in and out of Carnaval events :-)
