    Place-Royale, Quebec City
    by cruisingbug
The first French North American settlement, Place-Royale is over 400 years old.

Maison Chevalier, on rue Marche-Champlain, dates back to the late 1700s. Exhibits on the first floor explain the history of the area, and upstairs typical rooms from the region's past are depicted. Free admission.

    Other museums: Musée du Fort

  • Our walking tour guide recommended that we visit the Musée du Fort , near the Place d’Armes, for a good explanation of Québec’s military history. So we went along and headed up the stairs, arriving just in time for the next display. Passing through a small museum, we entered a theatrette containing a largish diorama which initially didn’t look very impressive (photos discouraged, hence none with this tip).

As the show began, there were little ships and flashing lights to illustrate positions and gun actions, even small puffs of smoke at times. Overall it gave a clear outline of the action leading the the British victory on the Plains of Abraham. It also explained the two subsequent attacks by American revolutionaries, which were beaten back by combined British and French forces – the insurgents had expected the French would join them.

So yes, it is worthy of a visit, though given that accepted history is fairly invariable you might be advised to choose between this and the “Odyssey” display at the Discovery Pavilion (next tip) as the differences are essentially in presentation. The Musée du Fort confines itself more to the military history.

The Musée is open daily from 1000 to 1700 from April to October, also from 1200 to 1600 in the Christmas Holidays (whenever they are!), and from 1100 to 1600 in February and March from 1100 to 1600 from Thursdays to Sundays.

Edifice Price (Price Building) is Old Quebec's first and only tall building. The 15-storey art-deco building was built in 1929 and was the headquarter of the Canadian lumber firm Price Pulp and Paper Company. It caused quite a stir from the nearby residences when it was built. As a result, the city does not allow any buildings taller than 60 meters.

The interior features two maple-wood elevators and copper plaques showing the scenes of the company's early activities.

In 2001, the top floors were converted into the official residence for Quebec's premier. Only the lobby is opened to the public.

Plaza des Jardins is where you can find the monument of the first Canadian cardinal and the archbishop of Quebec, Elzear-Alexandre Taschereau. The bronze and gold statue illustrates his devotion to God and assistance to the Irish victims of typhus in 1847.

Escalier Casse-Cou, literally means Breakneck Steps, is the steep stairway linking the Upper Town and Lower Town. There are 170 steps, with shops and restaurants lining at both sides.

From here, you can get a good view of the narrow streets and the buildings of Lower Town.

Musee de l'Amerique francaise focuses on the history of the French-speaking people in North America. It was built on the historical site of the Quebec Seminary dating to 1663. The neo-classical style building was built in 1838 by architect Thomas Baillairge.

There are about a dozen paintings from as early as the 15th century. And a 3500 years old mummy is also on display.

Adult admission is $4. But you can get a discount if you plans to visit Musee de la Civilisation and Centre d'Interpretation Place-Royale.

Place d'Armes was the most popular meeting place for military parades and public speaking events.

You can see the gothic style fountain in the middle of the square. The monument de la Foi (monument of the truth) is above the fountain, honoring the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the Peres Recollets (Franciscan monks) in 1615.

Porte Saint-Louis is one of the four remaining gates in the fortifications. The current gate was built in 1878 by Lord Dufferin, the governor of Canada at the time. It replaced the initial gate, which was too small for traffic to get through.

Terrasse Dufferin (Dufferin Terrace) is the wide boardwalk along the cliff in Upper Town, and has a panoramic view of the St. Lawrence River. It was built in 1878 by the governor of Canada Lord Dufferin.

It is a great place for a good stroll, people-watching, and watching the sunrise. Lots of street performers line along the boardwalk in the summer.
