Well, any of the souveneir shops are touristy, granted. There are a number of them too. Stop in if you must... I know that I did. :( However, my advice when shopping around is to not necessarily get a whole bunch of trinkets that say CANADA on them, but rather shell out a little more money and get something nice and unique from one of the stores... be it a small painting, jewelry, or woodcraft... just get something local. I kind of reccommend this with any place, really.

Don't buy anything that says 'Authentic Quebecois/Inuit/indian art in the old part of the city..cuz that's a sure sign it's bull. Also, when ever i buy something in souvenir shops, i think to myself..would any local be caught dead with what you are about to buy?

There are a few ugly streets in the old city with rows of tee-shirt shops, but fortunately they do not overrun the area. Some might claim the famous hotel 'Chateau Frontenac' is a tourist trap, but I still think it's pretty impressive.

  • Some tourist trap

Old licence plate of cars, Nordiques t-shirts.

Unique Suggestions: Don't buy too much in the Old Québec, there's a lot of shopping mall all around Québec City.

Fun Alternatives: Place Laurier, Place Ste-Foy, Place de la City are 3 shopping mall next to each other, in Sainte-Foy, take the bus, it's only 30 minutes, and that's a chance to meet people, and to see the city differently.
The alternative : downtown Québec City, 10 minutes from the Old Québec, you'll be in Saint-Roch quartier (where I live)

    Maple products

    by violette_ca Updated Jun 25, 2008

Don't buy the maple products, like sirup and cookies, at the tourist stores, it's too expensive.

Unique Suggestions: In the tourist area just buy the maple sugar candies because they don't have at the grocery stores.

Fun Alternatives: You can go at any grocery store off the tourist area and find it. The sirup in glass jar is very expensive but the look is cute i agree.
