Eastend Things to Do
Did you know that the very first dinosaur fossil in Canada was discovered in Saskatchewan?
The Discovery Centre is a small museum dedicated to the 1991 discovery of "Scotty," the most complete T. rex dicovered in Canada to date near the small town of Eastend, Saskatchewan. I wouldn't call it a must-see while visiting Saskatchewan, but more of a good stop if you're in the area. For example, we stopped in after spending the weekend in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, which is under an hour west of the centre. You are automatically signed up for the tour when you pay admission, which includes an introductory video about Scotty's discovery. While we weren't impressed with our tour guide (a young girl who didn't seem genuinely interested in or knowledgeable about paleontology), the displays were very interesting and informative. We also got to see the real fossilised bones of Scotty, though not assembled, because all research on the remains is conducted on site. The centre looks great for kids and has a number of interactive programs. The gift shop has lots of neat toys and knick-knacks.
The dicovery centre building has won architectural awards for its innovative design. It is partly buried in the hillside, with only the front exposed.Related to:
