The Sobeys chain of supermarkets is presently the second largest in Canada, with 1300 stores spread across the country, generating an income of $13 billion in 2006. It was founded 100-years ago in 1907 in the province of Nova Scotia, so as a fellow 'Maritimer' from New Brunswick, I've always leaned toward them for groceries! However, after moving to Regina, I dutifully made my rounds of the Superstore, Coop, Extra Foods and Sobeys and eventually settled on Sobeys as my main grocery store for price and other practical reasons. There are four Sobeys stores in the city but I usually use the one of Victoria Avenue.
I time my visits for about 8-9 AM on Saturday mornings before the crowd arrives!
What to buy: Typical prices are:
$4.48 Four 60-watt bulbs
$1.49 Liquid dish-washing detergent (324 ml)
$2.99 V-8 vegetable juice (1.89 L)
$4.45 Skinless chicken breasts (3)
$7.15 Frozen Thin-crust Greek Pizza (12-inch)
$1.32 Medium Navel oranges (4)
$0.75 Bananas (3)
$4.59 Loaf of Multi-grain bread
