    Prairie Ink Bakery: good desserts after shopping

    This is a book store where I usually look around and it takes more than an hour. When you get tired, there is a bistro that offers breakfast, lunch, or dinner, nice desserts, coffee.... There is a different program for every day and live music sometimes.

    Favorite Dish: My favorite meal is samossas, do not try if you don't eat spicy food.

    The Berry Barn: Saskatoon Berrys

    The front (left) of the barn

    The city of Saskatoon gets its name from the Cree Indian word mis-sask-quah-toomina, the name given to a berry that grows locally. The Berry Barn is primarily a dessert restaurant that specializes in products using the Saskatoon berry. Situated in a berry orchard on the banks of the river, the building is beautifully maintained and surrounded by a well tended garden. The Berry Barn is open from April to October.

    The Berry Barn also offers products for sale made from Saskatoon Berrys: jams, candles, champagne and many others. If you can't make it to the Berry Barn, their products are also available from a vending cart in the Midtown Plaza mall downtown. The souvenir store at the airport also offers a small selection of Berry Barn products.

    Favorite Dish: No alcohol is available for sale at the Berry Barn but you can bring your own if you would like some served with your meal. Other than berry themed desserts, the Berry Barn has Ukrainian food available, perogies, sausage, cabbage rolls.

    Mykonos: Blackened Chicken

    by penumbra Updated Apr 4, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    You have to go down to go up

    A Greek Restaurant in the heart downtown Saskatoon. Seating is available outside during the summer, otherwise you have to go downstairs, inside and then upstairs to get to the restaurant. Once inside, tables are available in an alcove to the right, overlooking the road or in the main dining room to the left. Service is prompt and friendly. During the week, the restaurant usually has other patrons but you should be able to get in without a reservation.

    Favorite Dish: The attached web site provides and overview of the menu. The salads are available with blackened chicken which I would highly recommend. The chicken is very tender and melts in your mouth. The spices on the chicken are hot in your mouth and cool down only after your next taste of salad.

    Pho: Vietnamese

    Phos at Midtown Plaza Mall

    There are at least 10 Vietnamese restaurants in the 5 x 5 block downtown area of Saskatoon. Throughout the winter, we decided to visit them all… or at least until we found one we liked.

    Shanghai Kitchen (a.k.a. Pho’s ) 120 Idylwyld Dr. S [a bit seedy, but the best food and good service];

    Red Pepper Restaurant 145 3rd Ave. S [a popular choice];

    Saskatoon Asian 136 2nd Ave. S [has a separate room for groups up to 30];

    Vietnamese Diner 702 22nd St. W [just outside downtown];

    Ding Dong 105 21St E [sticky table tops and no booze];

    Saigon on 3rd Ave 325 3rd Ave. N [never anyone in there]

    Lee’s Saigon Palace 123 3rd Ave S [chef had dirty fingernails];

    Saigon Rose 69 24th St E [walls hadn’t been washed for years];

    Chau’s Commodore 108 2nd Ave. N [not much in the buffet at night];

    421 3rd Ave [too scary to even try]

    Favorite Dish: At Pho's, try #46: Vermicelli noodles with chicken and spring roll.

    Carver's: Steak

    by penumbra Updated Jun 19, 2006

    Saskatoon Station Place on Idylwyld

    There are a couple of good steak restaurants downtown, but try to go there when someone else is paying because they can get expensive:

    Carvers Steak House 612 Spadina Cr. E;

    Saskatoon Station Place 221 Idylwyld Dr. N;

    Johns Prime Rib & Steak House 401 21st St. E;

    Outside of downtown, there are a couple of excellent (chain) steak restaurants:

    The Keg 1110 Grosvenor Ave. (8th St);

    Tony Roma’s 125 Circle Drive East

    Favorite Dish: At The Keg, try "The Baseball"... so thick, you won't be able to finish it.

    All you can eat (2 hour limit)

    A real crowd pleaser. When you can’t agree on a place to go, it has a little something for everyone. It’s fast and at $10/person, a bargain. There are five separate tables of food: Asian, vegetarian Asian, North American, fruits and salads, desserts.

    Favorite Dish: Yes, they even have ginger beef.

    If you are a coffee drinker, I recomand this place to go and meet with the friends. It is located on 8Th. Street and it is very easy to find it. Most of the restaurants and cofee shopes in Saskatoon are located on 8th Street.

    Mystic Java: My favorite

    This is my favorite Coffee & Tea House in the city. The reason that I choose to go here first, than any other place in the city, is because there are magazines and newspapers. They have also games, such as domino, monopoly, toys for children...
    You can find here desserts to die for, but also they have icecream, and very healthy lunch with your choice of soup or salade.
    If you are my guest, this is the place that I am going to show you first, maybe because I feel like it is my living room where I gather with my friends and family on daily bases.

  • If you're looking for a...

    by katsiris Written Aug 26, 2002

    If you're looking for a restaurant, you've come to the right place. Saskatoon has the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada, and it shows in the quality of food service.

    As a result, choosing a favourite restaurant is no easy task, but for an evening out with the family, I reccomend the Athena Restaurant in Sutherland (900 Central Avenue). The prices are as reasonable as anywhere else in the city, the service is always friendly, and the food is great and plentiful. I always vow to save some room for one of their great desserts, but I rarely manage to do so.
    There is nothing especially unique about the restaurant, but the combination of good food, good service, and a nice setting is hard to beat. When the second-story outdoor deck is completed in spring 2002, it will be a great place to sit on a nice day.

    Favorite Dish: I don't know if I could pick a favourite item. The Prime Rib they occasionally have on special is great, and they have amazing steaks and a really nice Greek salad. Probably my favourite menu item is actually a steak sandwich with Greek salad and stuffed potato (only available on the weekends). If you like soup, the Avgolemono (lemon rice) is spectacular.

    Moxies is a favorite to me, it offers so many different dishes that it will please even the picky eaters. This resturant gives you the welcome feeling of home, kids and adults a like enjoy the total package. It is located on the east side of Saskatoon .

    Favorite Dish: Their soups and salads are to die for, you'll enjoy. Noodle and Veggie dishes are wonderful just remember all the dishes are made to perfection so any you chose you'll be pleased with.

    If you love pasta which I do, you should check out Chaniti's, it is fabulous. But if you feel like going and having a few drinks and some snack foods I would suggest going to the Keg Lounge on Thursday's, The atmosphere is great. And the if you have a thing for Vietnamese food you should definatly goto Saigon Rose. They are 3 Locations I think!!
    They are all really nice places were the atmosphere allows you to unwind and relax.
    It's not overly priced and the food is always prepared to perfection!!

    At night this place becomes a bar, often with live bands. Always a unique experience! The live music is usually alternative so you never know quite what to expect (although you can expect a small cover charge).

    Favorite Dish: All of the food here is delicious and of the Mexican type. I am partial to the salads and I love their chips and salsa.

    Outside of the city, in an old Texaco service station, you find an intimate and romantic setting with impeccable service and some of the best food in the world.

    Favorite Dish: Too many to list; the principle flavour behind all of the dishes is Peruvian in origin.
