Most restaurants: Tips/Gratuities expectations and taxes
by CdnJane
When I'm traveling, I'm never sure what to do about tips. Pretty much in Canada it will be indicated if the tip/gratuity/service-charge is included. Groups from, normally, 10 people and over, 15% gratuity is already included, and you will be receiving only 1 bill. Tips, coming from the phrase "To Insure Prompt Service", are the bane of many people... they don't feel that they should have to augment the staff's wages; however, this is the fact - most establishments only pay minimum wages to their serving/clean up staff, and the tips really do help the staff put food on their own table. The rule of thumb in tipping seems to be - 15% of the bill BEFORE taxes (why tip on government charges) or 10% of the bill AFTER taxes. Leave the tip on the little tray where the bill was placed, or inside the folder, under your plate... or when you pay the bill from your table and the server takes it away...
