Athabasca Falls

by MichaelFalk1969

These spectacular waterfalls are one of the first attractions along the Icefields Parkway when driving from Jasper to Banff in a southernly direction. Surely worthwhile seeing. though the fact that some idiot build a utility road over the canyon leading from the waterfalls was a bit anticlimactic. The way from the falls to the river including photostops and return is roughly 30 minutes.

Thunderbird Park - Victoria, Vancouver Island

by MichaelFalk1969

An impressive collection of Pacific Indian Totem Poles in Victoria/Vancouver Island, right behind the Royal BC Museum and Helmcken House (established 1940). The area is part of the Royal BC Museum (admission to Thunderbird Park is free). The original poles have been replaced in 1992.

Stanley Park

by MichaelFalk1969

Stanley Park - created in 1888 - is the largest park of Vancouver with several attractions that draw the crowds (it`s even bigger than New York`s Central Park!). It features extensive woodland areas with giant Douglas-fir, Western Redcedar, Western Hemlock, and Sitka Spruce trees. These have been partly devastated by a storm in 2006, damaging up to 3000 trees, the effects can still be seen in some places in Stanley Park. An attractive seawall route is open to pedestrians and cyclists and links several attractions of the park; you can also make use of the free trolley bus. Especially worthwhile sights of Stanley Park are the Totem Pole Collection near Brockton Point, the Vancouver Aquarium and the Rose Garden.

Totem Poles - Stanley Park

by MichaelFalk1969

One of the biggest attractions of Stanley Park (and Vancouver in general) is an impressive collection of eight Native American totem poles - some painted, some unpainted - near the Brockton cricket field. Interpretative signs explain the history of the totem poles and the significance of the respective carvings and symbols.

Cathedral Grove

by MichaelFalk1969

Cathedral Grove is the better-known name of the MacMillan Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. The main attraction is a wood of giant fir-douglas-trees, some up to 800 years old. The biggest tree here has a diameter of 9 meter! It is impossible not to be overawed by this ensemble of giant trees. A short interpretative hike leads through the impressive wood grove. Cathedral Grove is easy to reach on the central Highway 4, roughly 30 minutes driving distance from Qualicum Beach. A note to photographers: It is rather hard to take photos here, as it is rather dark among the tree giants and they won`t fit on a single picture, so you might try and improvise with your panorama function, if your digital camera has one.

Jasper NP: Mount Edith Cavell Meadows-Hike

by MichaelFalk1969

This is a pretty popular hike (though it is rather steep and long), but to be honest, it is not my favourite one in Jasper. If you don`t have much time, I`d rather do the Bald Hills Hike or Lake Kartine. From Banff, you take the Icefields Parkway south until you reach the junction "Mount Edith Cavell"; then you follw a pothole-riddled tar-road for 12 km until you reach the parking lot. Remember the speed limits and avoid the potholes at all costs, they are pretty deep and can cause serious damage to your car. The trailhead starts from the Mt. Edith Cavell parking lot and follows a bleak moraine landscape at the beginning. You can view a glacier and a glacier lake at the start, then the path goes through woodland and finally through alpine meadows. There is a good chance to see pikas or marmots during the first leg of the hike. Roundtrip ca. 3-4 hours. What really buggered me off was that...

Strathcona Park: Paradise Meadows Hiking Trail

by MichaelFalk1969

The Mount Washington area is the most accessible part of Stratcona National Park on Vancouver Island. From the parking place of the Mount Washington ski resort (follow the signs "Raven Lodge"), the trailhead of Paradise Meadows continues on a boardwalk through woodland and then marshes with beautiful panoramas and great landscape. The hike is rather short (under 1 hour), but the trailheads of other, longer hikes (for example the recommended Sawdust Trail) also start along the Paradise Meadows trail. We saw deer and chipmunks here, and some birds are almost tame.

Vancouver Island

by MichaelFalk1969

We only saw a glimpse of Vancouver Island, even though we stayed there for three full days. Do not underestimate the distances on Vancouver Island: From central Qualicum, the distance to either Victoria in the south or Long Beach in the west is about 2 1/2 hours. In fine weather, the ferry crossing from Vancouver to Vancouver island is an attraction in itself. One of the most beautiful boat trips I took so far. We concentrated this time mainly on Mount Washington and Strathona Park which has some beautiful hiking trails, and the capital of Victoria (with the obligatory whale-watching-trip). Though well-frequented, Cathedral Grove is an absolute must-see destination, too (see my detailed Canada tips). Unfortunately we missed on Long Beach and the Pacific Rim National Park, as well as the Butchard Gardens in Victoria.

Canada Place

by MichaelFalk1969

Canada Place - one of the best-known landmarks of Vancouver - was established during the World Expo of 1986 and is located on the Burrard Inlet waterfront. The architecture roughly resembles a ship under full sail. It is the home of the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre, the Pan Pacific Hotel, Vancouver's World Trade Centre, and the world's first permanent IMAX 3D theatre. It is also an important cruise ship terminal for the region, and you will surely find gigantic cruise ships moored on either side of Canada Place. The best way to see Canada Place and the harbour skyline panorama is by taking the cheap SeaBus-ferry to Lonsdale Quay and back (be sure to get a seat at the back window!).

Tip Photo
Wells Gray National Park

by MichaelFalk1969

Wells Gray Park is a Provincial Park in eastern British Columbia worthwhile as a destination in its own right or as an ideal stopover if you travel by car between Vancouver and Jasper. The most common entry point to the park is the city of Clearwater (go to the visitor`s centre there and provide yourself with hiking maps for the park). Hiking, trail-riding and canoeing are possible, and it is not as overrun as parts of Banff and Jasper sometimes are. Major tourist draws are - to name but a few examples - the impressive Helmcken Falls, Murtle River (and the "mushbowl") & Murtle Lake, Spahat Creek, and the Trophy Mountain Meadows.
