Cheap Long Distance Overland Travel

by aqazi

This is more of a north American tip and more suited for you tight, skin flint students out there. Or people like me who have no job and all the time it takes to travel. Anyway prices for fliying around canada can be expensive but if you need to get from one point to another without breaking your journey, then greyhound have some great deals besides their bus passes. They have an advance purchase single or return deal to most major cities at $125CAD o/w or $200 rtn. You have to pay tax but even at $215 if you take the longest journey you can get from Miami to Whitehorse and back again! This works well in Canada too as you can travel between the eastern and western cities for the same price, say VanC to Halifax or VanC to Montreal. I'm planning to do the VanC - Montreal route this xmas, it takes 72hrs but I'll be saving myself at least $200.

Driving across Canada

by aqazi

As you can see fro our breif travelogue driving across Canada is quite easy but you do need plenty of time and a few CD's to play especially as you drive across the prairies as there isn't a whole lot to look at. The scenery in northern Ontario is amazing and driving through the rockies in Alberta will be the highlight of the journey. Gas stations are actually well spaced appart and its highly unlikley that you'll ever be at a limbo unless you drive a big car very quickly with the ac turned up. The same goes for places to stop, there are plenty of picnic spot along the main highways especially the trans canadian highway. Gas prices will vary along your journey, begining with cheap on the east then getting very expensive in the middle but only getting marginally cheaper on the west coast. If you travelling to Vancouver Island then check out the ferry schedule so that you don't miss the...

Bus from Port McNeill to Port Hardy

by travel2unravel

A Laidlaw/Grey Line bus is available daily between Port McNeill and Port Hardy in northern Vancouver Island (~$12). This represents a segment of the island-length route connecting Victoria in the south with Port Hardy in the north. Port Hardy has an airport with direct flights from Vancouver, as well as a BC Ferries terminal. Port McNeill is a center for sea kayaking in the area. None of the hotels seemed to be aware of or acknowledge this alternative to the local taxis (~$40).

DAD'S 1927 STAR automobile

by Simonneeddy

Picture of My father ,his 2 brothers and 2 sisters and my sister, brother and cousin In 1928 the picture shows how we got around in those days. We were on our way from Montreal to Smiths Falls Ontario and had a flat. The roads and tires were of poor quality then. TODAY we have Good highways and car or motor home rental available all over. Nearly All airlines come here, Cruise ships also. Greyhound BUS line coast to coast or There is a Rail line ( VIA RAIL) across the country sea to sea. Rent a motor home, rent a car or motor bike or a bicycle. In the city use public transportation ( very safe)See My PAGES for 'SMITHS FALLS' where I was born.

Greyhound

by BRYCEY

I would not recommend catching greyhound buses if you can avoid it. Everybus we caught semed to be full of crazy people. If you can afford it hire a car or camper van, you will see alot more. Greyhound buses only take you to bus depots (odviously) and then you have to try and make you own way out to different national parks etc. Greyhound buses are very resonable but they are tough work on long trips.

Driving to Yellowknife

by ktduncan

We tried to drive to Yellowknife but when we arrived in Hay River we discovered that there wasn't enough ice on the Great Slave Lake for the ice bridge to be open, but there was too much for the ferry to be in operation. This was in early June and everyone wanting to drive to Yellowknife had to wait in Hay River for days. The campground and hotels were overflowing.

THE INSIDE PASSAGE CRUISE over 15 hours long!!!!!

by richard4

again i find myself on a mode of transport destined to keep me hostage for what seemed like forever. For many the inside passage cruise is a wonder, yes ok,but 15 plus hours(no way),again i did not realise what i had signed myself up for,15 hours of hell, endless laps of the boat don't fill up much time. For many this trip was fantastic and if thats you thats great, but me,NEVER AGAIN,i was ready to kill by the end,as the coach finally trundled off the ramp i cannot describe the relief. If 15 hours on a ship is your thing go ahead,if not then decide for yourself.

THE SKEENA RAIL 12 hours plus long journey!!!

by richard4

whilst for many a scenic train ride is an enjoyable experience,i myself have limits as to how long i can stand the boredom, hence my mention of the skeena trip.It must be said up to the time we were about to get on the train i had no idea just how long it was to be.Back home a train trip over 2 hours is usually avoided as i go mad with boredom before long,so you can imagine finding out the skeena is a trip over 12 yes 12 hours long was not fun,by the end i was desperate to get off,so you decide if 12 hours plus is ok fine,if not proceed with caution

Can-Am Travel Pass

by CdnJane

If you are going to be doing a lot of travel by bus around Canada or the US and are not sure about your schedule, you may want to consider a bus pass. Gray Line's website offers a variety of passes and it should be noted that there are passes available for people living outside of Canada & the USA to purchase. Adult International prices vary from $359US for 15 days to $579US for 60 Days, and there are prices for Children, Students and Seniors, as well. This is for a full US/Canada pass. There are also regional passes, and also passes strictly for the US or for Canada. The Canada Pass starts at $255CDN for 7 Days and goes up to $575CDN for 60 days for adults, and there again, are also student, children's and senior's fares plus 7% GST (goods & services tax) on the Canadian fares. There is a list for where you can purchase the passes.

Ferries

by tvdm

From Vancouver, take the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo or Tsawassen to Victoria and rent a car: public transport is not that well developed here. As there is only one road leading to Pacific Rim National Park, you won't have many problems getting there.Driving around in your own car is the best thing to do. It's not that expensive to rent one (well, for Europeans anyway).
