Word of warning: Check your trunk carefully before you cross the border. My friend was an athlete and an outdoorsman, but it was not a simple task explaining to Border Patrol why we had a machete and a baseball bat in our trunk. :)

by gorky9hr

this is not an actual warning, cause it may happen anywhere, but it surprised me how it happened in the middle of the day in the very heart of Ottawa, just a few meters away from a guy who's selling parking tickets...a radio was stolen from the car, very expencive one + some dance cd-s (at least we knew that a thief didn't like my Leonard Cohen and Asian Dub Foundation cd-s) - and the strangest thing: after breaking the window, a thief locked the doors after him.maybe he wanted to prevent someone else from stealing Leonard Cohen (such a nice guy, that thief! :)))

No warnings about anything....

by talulahrz

No warnings about anything. Everyone was incredibly nice. You can leave your car running, doors unlocked, in a parking lot while you go inside and shop. The crime rate is about 0. There hasn't been a murder in 50 years. It's beautiful

I am always aware of the...

by A.P.S.

I am always aware of the wildlife when I travel, and here in Canada, there is one of the largest varieties of wildlife that can be potentially harmfull to you. Firstly, if you come in contact with bears, be very quiet, and slowly back away. If they don,t notice you then you are probably fine. Bears generally don't attack humans, but if you interupt a meal, or get between a mother and her young, you could be in big trouble. If you can't back away, and an altercation is inevitable, play dead. You are probably going to get bit and mauled fairly badly, but playing dead is about the only way to save your life. It's much easier just to keep your distance from them. Even if they see you, you will probably be alright, just don't approach them. If you see one in an urban enviroment, let someone know, and the game wardens will come and remove the animal.

by ShanMonster

Certain hot parts of British Columbia (particularly in the Okanogan Valley) are home to rattlesnakes. Generally speaking, these snakes will give you lots of warning rather than bite you. However, just because it's not rattling doesn't mean it's not a rattlesnake. Sometimes the rattles break off, or sometimes it's a very young snake that doesn't have its rattles yet. Just because it's a baby doesn't mean it can't kill you.Similarly, in the desert parts of British Columbia, watch out for black widow spiders. They are a pretty and small spider with a trademark red hourglass on their backs. They tend to live in dark sheds, pumphouses, and old paint cans. Chances are, their bite won't kill you, but it can make you very sick.

by ShanMonster

When at a national park, do not feed the wildlife. And please, do NOT feed the bears, no matter how cute they look. Also beware of wildlife that doesn't look particularly harmful. Raccoons and foxes are prone to rabies, and I can guarantee you don't want to have to go for rabies shots. Badgers and groundhogs can also give you a fierce mauling when cornered. Also, at certain times of the year, during the rut seasons, moose, caribou, and elk are as likely to attack you as to bound away gracefully. Oh yes, and pigeons and seagulls do aerial target practice, but you knew that already.(Believe it or not, I love animals and commune with nature on a regular basis.)

Air Canada - Discount service at premium prices. Domestic flights are not too bad, but international flights are embarassingly inadequate. If you're flying into Canada, avoid Air Canada, or else you'll get a very poor first impression of the country.
