Blackflies, when you are out...

by Don_Wright

Blackflies, when you are out in the bush. In the summer, from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan into Ontario. They bite, and you dont even know it, until you get home and start itching. Then sores and welts form, and it is painful and uncomfortable until they heal. They get you in the scalp, and around your ankles, too!

Moose. I mean when you are...

by Don_Wright

Moose. I mean when you are driving on the highway. When a moose wants to go somewhere, it goes. If it crosses a highway, it just lopes along and crosses it. This is a big animal, and it has no idea of right of way of car traffic. So keep your eyes on the road ahead of you, when you are on the highway. People in Michigan have been killed by hitting deer, as the deer have spindly legs, and their body mass rolls over your hood and right through your windshield. But imagine hitting a moose, which is a heck of a lot more massive than a deer.

by Don_Wright

Running out of gas! When traveling in Canada, when you are on the highway out of a major city, you can travel for miles and miles to the next town. Be careful, and plan your trip, as there are no gas stations only in the towns. On the highway, there is only bush on the side, and an occasional moose crossing the highway.

by farseek

Customs can be a pain, even for U.S. citizens coming into Canada. I have been pulled aside by these people on several occasions for no good reason. I can't even attribute it to my roguish appearance, as I was travelling on business and wearing a suit. They don't really keep you out, they just like to give you a hard time. To avoid this, if you are travelling on business, carry a letter explaining your purpose in Canada. If you are not travelling on business, just say you are there to drink their fine beer, sample their maple syrup, and watch their great hockey teams. This will make many friends for you among the local Canadians. What's even more disturbing though is that it can be a hassle *leaving* the country. They love you so much they don't want you to leave! Ha ha! It's almost easier getting in the place. U.S. customs officials have taken to doing 'random' searches, which they told...

by mizgoldie

One of the greatest things you will see while travelling the Trans Canada highway through the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, is the wildlife on the side of the road. Occassionally you have to stop for the animals who like to be on the road or the ones just crossing the road. Likewise, there are many tourists who enjoy taking pictures of them grazing, so this posses as a hazard as well. So just beware of sudden stops!

Nature itself!

by tvdm

Crime lies at a very low rate on Vancouver Island. Your main concern is nature itself: never wander off on your own without good preparation. And when you go to the ocean: watch out for the surf, it's a rough place!

by finzy

We didn't encounter any great difficulties or danger while we were in B.C. but there are a couple of things you should be aware of such as 'Davie St' Vancouver, a street where beggars or panhandlers frequent, especially at night. Another place we encounted undesirables was'Canada Place' downtown Vancouver, it was nothing to be approached and asked for money for one reason or another, mostly lodgings or food.

by Dirk_Morley

The only thing you should keep your eyes open for while camping or backpacking is bears, if you encounter one, just walk backwards and keep an eye on them. While walking, keep talking and if you do this, your chances of seeing a bear is unlikley, they will hear you and they will leave the area. Bears are more scared of you and will usually run away, so don't try to feed them or pet them, as you won't like the end result.

Churchill can have bears...

by hcameron

Churchill can have bears anywhere. When they venture too close they are taken to 'polar bear jail'. Two friends that I met on the trip got a real scare. They were walking near the hospital about 11:00pm at night. They were wanting to see the northern lights by getting into a dark area. (The northern lights were spectacular). There are signs near the back of the hospital warning about bears. My friends were enjoying the wonders of the sky when a large polar bear lifted its head not more than 15 feet away. They could have easily been a midnight snack. Polar bears can be very aggressive. They are at the top of the food chain and nothing really scares them. They may not run away like some bears. (even grizzlies) The week before my visit, one of the bears got mad at a two year old (500+pounds) cub. In one swipe the bigger bear killed the smaller one. The carcass was still on the tundra.

Any and all citizens of the United States of America should be forewarned that there are no handguns and very few others forms of weaponry to be found in Canada. If you try to bring any rifles, shotguns, or handguns over the border they will be confiscated unless you declare them.
