Sourdough Saloon: Home of the legendary sourtoe cocktail

Sourdough Saloon before the night crowd rushes in

If you're walking around Dawson and people ask you where they can go get a drink with a toe in it, you can lead them to the Downtown Hotel saloon and watch them order a sourtoe cocktail. The story goes back to 1973, when a man froze his toe and had to have it amputated so the gangrene wouldn't spread. This was done as an in-house job: they got the man drunk and chopped off the toe with an axe, which he kept as a souvenir. When he told his story back at the saloon, probably still riding on the fumes of his "anesthesia", they decided that anyone who was brave enough to drink a shot of liquor in which the toe was soaking would be made an honorary sourdough (a "sourdough" is what you call people who have make it through at least one whole winter in Dawson - otherwise you're a Cheechakoo) and so the tradition was born. The rule goes that the toe needs to touch your lips otherwise it doesn't count. If you do it right, you receive a certificate. As disgusting as it sounds, thousands of certificate have been issued over the years, and several amputated toes have been donated thoughout the years to replace the original one, which was accidentally swallowed in 1980 by a man who was working on his 13th straight sourtoe cocktail (!).

The Pit: Dawson's most famous watering hole

by Jefie Updated Jun 24, 2013

Dawson City's Westminster Hotel (est. 1898)

Although technically this is a nighttime tip, it could easily qualify as a daytime tip since the Westminster Hotel's Snake Pit, known all around town as The Pit, opens at 9:00 am everyday. It's dark and musky, and you can't find anything more authentic in the way of entertainment in Dawson City. The pit is where the locals go to catch up on the news, cry over a broken heart, and hear some of their own play live music (starts at 4:00 pm daily). The place closes at 11:00 pm, which is when the crowd usually transfers to the Lounge (also at the Westminster, you don't even need to step outside), which only closes at 2:00 am. So you're left with 7 whole hours to sober up before the Pit opens!

Bombay Peggy's: Enjoy a naughty martini in an old brothel

Bombay Peggy was the nickname of Margaret Vera Dorval, a notorious Madam and bootlegger who ran her illicit businesses in this boarding house in the 1940s. Some 15 years ago, the house was moved to its present location and entirely restored to be turned into an historic inn and pub. True to its past, Bombay Peggy's pub offers a wide variety of fantastic martinis with saucy names like "Spank my naughty ass" and the "Brazen hussy" (the one I tried was called the "Temptress" and it was really, really good). There's a small outdoor patio at the back, which makes it a great place to go to enjoy the midnight sun. Inside, the pub is very charming, but it actually looks more like an artsy cafe than an old brothel. They also serve food - the menu is quite limited but it changes everyday and it always features local products.

Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall: Slot Machines and Can-Can Girls

    Diamond Tooth Gertie's

Diamond Tooth Gerties is Canada's oldest casino and the only northern one. It's a small place as casinos go, but a VERY lively one - or at least it was on the evening I visited in mid-August. There are roulette wheels, blackjack tables, slot machines, refreshments, and can-can girls.

A free floorshow is presented three times nightly at 8:30, 10:30 and midnight. I learned that they quit collecting the $6.00 cover charge at 11:00 p.m., so being as frugal as I am, I went at about five minutes after 11:00.

I invested $10.00 US for which I was given $12.50 CDN for the slot machines. The first machine I chose gobbled up the quarters fast, so with only 10 coins remaining I switched slots, and with only 50 cents left, hit the jackpot. I won $75.00, and forced myself to stop right there and pocket my winnings. I'm not always so lucky.

The can-can show was great. There were two singers (male and female), four dancing girls, a pianist and a saxaphone player. The music was excellent and the PG rated show was high energy and lots of fun. I enjoyed it immensely while I ate pizza and drank diet coke bought with my winnings.

Diamond Tooth Gertie: Can can shows and gambling

    diamond tooth gertie gambling hall

It's Canada's oldest gambling hall (1901), and it's very charming. It tries to recapture the spirit of the Gold Rush and Pioneer days, especially in the three nightly shows. They are can-can shows and they are all different: one starts not long after the opening hour, one at around 9 PM and one is at midnight.
About the name: Diamond Tooth Gertie was a dance-hall queen called Gertie Lovejoy, who was famous for having a diamond between her teeth.
