Matthew Watson's General Store: The Largest Store in Carcross

by mikelisaanna

Matthew Watson's General Store is the main store in Carcrosss, a small town in southern Yukon. It claims to be the oldest continuously operating store in the Yukon Territory and sells a little bit of everything, including toys and plenty of Yukon souvenirs. We bought some Yukon Christmas ornaments and postcards there. It is a bit of a tourist trap, but fun to explore. They also have a website, which they use during the winter months when there are no tourists.

Madley’s General Store: "We've Got It All"

by mcpangie

This is a great store to stop by if you need to pick up anything you left behind at home. Just make sure you get the right item then because your next stop is kilometers and kilometers away. Case in point -- a few years back my camera battery died, and I stopped in at Madley's to buy a new one. I didn't change it out until I was sitting at the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry Terminal 3 hours later in Haines, Alaska! It was the wrong battery and it was much too far to drive back. Smoked SalmonThey also have good deli food available, along with a nice variety of fresh produce and other groceries. More than the average price in urban Canada or America. The camera battery was 4 times the amount I would have paid in Anchorage, Alaska - even with the currency conversion factored in. However, food items are affordably priced.

Blue-Moose Turd Factory: Over 10,000 Turds Sold!

by mcpangie

This time of year this shop isn't available for turd-shopping for those of you in the market for moose turds. But humorous sign will still catch your eyes. I think this is at Kluane Wilderness Village, a very helpful gas station basically out in the middle of nowhere that you may find yourself very thankful for. What you will probably want help with is gas or something for the trip. I just needed to use the restroom and also I bought a nifty "I saw Elvis in the Yukon, but not the UFO" bumper sticker and a diet Pepsi (can't spell it in French). Less than you would expect because the American dollar is worth a little more than the Canadian dollar. I bought $5.50 in Canadian, and gave the clerk a $5.00 US bill and got back some change.
