by Vanislander I thought this shot was amazing. Looks cloudy right? Its very hard to see but the pilot came on and said that this was actually snow,it was clear below! There where mountins 15000 feet high, with 10000 feet of snow on top, equaling 25000 feet above sea level. We were at 41000 ft high for a usual plane flight. Leave a Comment

by Vanislander This 'Road' is the pathway of a Glacier! The glacier was on the other side of the plane so I did not get a shot in time.... Leave a Comment

by natefest Find a way on the ice sheet! Some polar/ice research stations operate year round.
It's quite amazing landing a large cargo plane on a snow field. Even more exciting is the take-off. Leave a Comment

by Travel_Gal When I was in Thule, the water in the harbour was still frozen solid. Walking on the ice, I went over to this iceberg, and was able to touch it which was such an awesome feeling. The colours were so blue and green, and the ice that I was walking on was so smooth, smoother than anything I'd ever seen, before or since. Leave a Comment

by ClaesDenmark In 1721, with the aid of the Danish king, a Norwegian priest called Hans Egede successfully mounted an expedition to Greenland, where he wished to rechristianize the Northerners. Greenland did not become part of Denmark before in 1953. The colonial age was at an end, and like the Faeroe Islands, Greenland too was now given two members in The Folketing (the Danish parliament). As Danish citizens, the Greenlandic people now had ordinary civic rights and their general state of health and educational facilities were radically improved.

by ClaesDenmark Owing to the country's large landmass there are huge variations with regard to both humidity and temperature. Climatologically, a distinction is made between a northern high-arctic, middle low-arctic and southern subarctic zone. The richest plant growth is found in the subarctic belt, which includes only the very southernmost part of Greenland. Here, there are low-lying tracts of forest with birch scrub, while in the low-arctic area one finds dense, tall willow scrub. In the high-arctic area, there is only low-lying vegetation of arctic willow, in addition to many expanses of moorland, marsh and ponds.

Maybe I'm cheating: I've never been on the ground in Greenland, but I've flown over it innumerable times. Take a look at the travelogue for a series of aerial shots taken from 33,000 feet. Leave a Comment

Hi Eric, I can only relate a bit of experience from a very small part of Greenland. I was working at the Thule Air Base for a year but didn't get to do much besides explore the local area. Seeing the ice cap is very cool, as is seeing the glaciers flowing into the fjords or just walking along the shore listening to the ice in the ocean cracking and popping and almost sounding like the musical sounds a stream makes flowing over a rocky bed with lots of mini-waterfalls. :-) I don't know about seeing polar bears while you're out, but seeing the huge rabbits/hares and the small foxes running about the country side is very interesting. Thule is so far north that there aren't any bushes or trees so I really didn't have much of hiking/outdoorsy experience. But we did have an ice cave up there, as well as camp century. I never made it out there, but it was a military base that was built UNDER the snow cap. And, of course, if you're out there early enough for the ocean to still be frozen over, you can walk out to icebergs that were frozen in place through the winter! It is a very coo, but very desolate place. :-) Leave a Comment
