Hvalsey church ruins are one of the oldest Norse ruins in the world, and the only ruins in Greenland! They are an hour and a half boat trip from Qaqortoq, through some of the most stunning scenery in the world. Small, bobbing icebergs, frozen streams that snake their ways down mountains, and huge, forebodding clouds that roll down the mountains and cover them in a mysterious, thick mist.
The location of the ruins brings a whole new meaning to 'in the middle of no-where' and there is very little shelter so if you choose to go, then make sure you pick a nice day. It is very interesting walking around the site of the ruin and learning about their history.
There is a good viewpoint of the surrounding fjords at the top of a nearby hill, that also has a 'good-luck' stone pile on the top. It is well worth going up there for the view.
I strongly recommend the tour to anyone visiting Qaqortoq, but MAKE SURE TO PICK A NICE DAY TO GO, or face the consequences! Not suitable for those in wheelchairs or the infirm.

Qaqortoq ------- An untouched wonderland

Qaqortoq is the second most tranquil place I have ever visited on Earth, I was amazed by it. The traditionally brightly coloured Greenlandic houses sit cheerily on the quayside, gradually making their...
