    Hiking maps for Greenland
  • Tip Rating:
  • Drybag for maps and valuables

Hiking maps are indispensable on Greenland. There is a series of maps called "Hiking Map .. (region)" published by greenland Tourism. They pretty much cover what you want to see and where you want to walk on Greenland, bu the scale is a bit too big at times. The maps are strong and well updated, however, somebody told me the glaciers have changed quite a bit since the map was made and uncovered new lakes and other hinderances.
In additions to this map series in 1:100 000, 1:75 000 and orienteering and recreational maps for the settlements, I know of a guide book that comes with a map of the hiking areas south of Ilulissat Kangerlua.
The maps you can buy in dedicated map shops (order: Greenland Tourism or Compukort, Kaerlodden 2, DK- Maarslet, Denmark), climbing shops as South Greenland is a climber's paradise, or at the airport and tourist offices on arrival Greenland. Skandinavisk Korthandel in Copenhagen had the full set..

Gear for short hikes in Ilulissat, Greenland
  • Tip Rating:
  • 1) A sturdy backpack or a cargo pack with a good daypack
    2) Waterproof (kayakers') bag for camera and valuables

    1)Rain -and wind-proof outer clothing.
2)Woolen or synthetic long underwear (top & bottom).
    3) Hat/warm caps, scarf, gloves even in summer.
    4) Very sturdy shoes or hiking boots suitable for slickrock, tussocky wet terrain and heather.

Mosquito head net and repellent in season

Twice as much film for your camera as you thought (slides 50-100 ASA)

    1) Alcohol-based cooking stove (fuel locally available)
    2) Something to sit on; the terrain is generally rocky or wet or both.
    3) A telescopic hiking staff for crossing rivers

Maps are locally available, or you buy in Copenhagen en route (Skandinavisk Korthandel) or in the tourist transit shop at Kangerlussuaq Airport.

    Packing List
  • Tip Rating:
  • Be prepared for all kinds of weather. Bring windproof and waterproof clothes, warm jerseys and sturdy walking shoes for all seasons. Temperatures can vary greatly during the day so bring also some slightly thinner clothes. I strongly advise sunglasses and protective sun lotion, also a mosquito net for the summer months (July and August). Extra warm clothes are necessary for dog-sledge expeditions.

    Warm Clothing
At least 2 pair of socks and gloves if you are travelling in the winter time. Sunglasses a must. You can consider renting the seal skin clothing from the local travel agent.
