Hiking maps for Greenland

by Saagar

Drybag for maps and valuables Hiking maps are indispensable on Greenland. There is a series of maps called "Hiking Map .. (region)" published by greenland Tourism. They pretty much cover what you want to see and where you want to walk on Greenland, bu the scale is a bit too big at times. The maps are strong and well updated, however, somebody told me the glaciers have changed quite a bit since the map was made and uncovered new lakes and other hinderances. In additions to this map series in 1:100 000, 1:75 000 and orienteering and recreational maps for the settlements, I know of a guide book that comes with a map of the hiking areas south of Ilulissat Kangerlua. The maps you can buy in dedicated map shops (order: Greenland Tourism or Compukort, Kaerlodden 2, DK- Maarslet, Denmark), climbing shops as South Greenland is a climber's paradise, or at the airport and tourist offices on arrival...

the best will be a medium size rock sack you can tie to the sledge. the best cold weather gear you can find. you need the best thermal wear and socks. you will also get traditional inuit clothing and shoes. bring all medical things u need with you and also toiletries. spare batteries. special bag for camera so it wont froze. a good flash. 50-100 ASA films. gloves than can warm your hands and easy to photo with. a good sleeping bag and tent that are good for very low temp. special gas container u can use for heating food and water.

Packing List

by Bjorgvin

Be prepared for all kinds of weather. Bring windproof and waterproof clothes, warm jerseys and sturdy walking shoes for all seasons. Temperatures can vary greatly during the day so bring also some slightly thinner clothes. I strongly advise sunglasses and protective sun lotion, also a mosquito net for the summer months (July and August). Extra warm clothes are necessary for dog-sledge expeditions.

Warm Clothing

by astroboy72

At least 2 pair of socks and gloves if you are travelling in the winter time. Sunglasses a must. You can consider renting the seal skin clothing from the local travel agent.
