I was walking at the unpaved road of Kulusuk and you would pass by this bench were a few of the local men were, watching the tourists as they pass by. I passed them twice and they were still looking at me and so I decided - what the heck, I will see if they will talk to me. I went up to them and said my famous greeting word - "HI".

Of course, they did not seem to speak English. And they just smiled at me, probably finding my audacity to approach them funny. And I motioned with my hand that i wanted a picture with them and they laughed and I just sat right on the bench and put my arms around the Inuits...hehehe...crazy tourist that I was.

I thanked them and they kept on talking to each other. Actually, they could pass for my relatives because they do have Mongolian-like features...so I guess they did';t see me as a tourist, but as a "brother"- a nosy brother, hehehe...Too bad I forgot to ask thejm to jump, haha

    Mentally Challenged Lady and Tolerance

Inuit lady asking for a cigarette, Kulusuk

Kulusuk has only about 316 inhabitants as of a recent official count. When I was there and after leaving the tupilak store, a lady approached me and she looked like she was inebriated. Was she or was she mentally challenged. She was asking for something and maybe it was money, I thought. But I realized later when my guide approached me that she was actually asking for cigarettes.

I did see this lady mroe times later and she was just walking around, and the Inuit people were not minding her. She was sitting on a porch and I asked her if I can take a photo and she just smiled and sang for me. Nice lady despite her mental incapacity...

The Inuits have nothing to hide and so they just let people do as they please. The lady did not bother the tourists so much...I did not see her approach anybody else. Maybe she is really mentally challenged and you might see her when you get there so just say hi for me...
