Favorite thing: I was raised Catholic my whole life even though I now go to a Christian Church. Still, going to the Basilica was very emotional for me. I read a sign near the top of the Basilica that said that"you are stepping on Holy ground because this is the very spot that the Virgen Mary appeared to Juan Diego". It was all over whelming.
I heard stories how some people would crawl on their knees to the Basilica and then I actually saw it. It brought tears to my eyes. I could see that this guy was in pain and just couldnt do it anymore but his faith had brought him here. I was told that more people used to do that before and now it isnt done as much.
At the Basilica there is a statue of the Pope John Paul the 2nd. It is said that he visited Mexico more than any other country in the world. About 90% of the people hear are devoted Catholics.
I was also told that the Pope, on one of his last visits, circled the City a few times via airplane before he left. He was very old by now and it was emotional for the people of Mexico because they knew it was probably his last visit to Mexico.

    Sunlight in the Cathedral

    Sunlight in the Cathedral

Fondest memory: I was in the Catedral Metropolitana at just the right time as the sun was shining through the window creating this ray of light. Unfortunately there was nobody around to take a picture of me bathing in the light. Nevertheless, it was tres cool.

you think THIS is crowded? HA!

Favorite thing: So many pilgrims, the really really faithful, visited the Shrine of Guadaloupe to view the sacred image of the Virgin Mary, that the old church was soon too fragile and too small to handle them. So this modern structure was built in 1987. Pope John Paul II even showed up in 1989, and they built him a special 2nd floor balcony alter from which to deliver Mass to the many many MANY thousands gathered below.

Favorite thing: Visit the Metropolitan Sagrarium next to the Cathedral of Mexico City, that was build in the 19th century. It has one of the most remarkable carved limestone facades in all New Spain. More info and pictures you find in the “Metropolitan Sagrarium travelogue ”. That is on the upper right corner of this page ;-)

Favorite thing: Visit the Cathedral of Mexico City on the Constitution Square. Even you are not a Catholic, this Cathedral is worth a visit. It is even nice to walk over the roof and enjoy the great views over the Constitution Square and surroundings. More info and pictures you find in the “Cathedral travelogue”. That is on the upper right corner of this page ;-)
