Have lunch at the Casa de los Azulejos -- a tiled restaurant in the middle of the city. The ambience is excellent and the food is good, too.

La Casa de los Azulejos (House of the Tiles) - the outside walls are decorated with typical blue tiles
La Casa de los Azulejos is a must see restaurant in the capital.

The dining area is situated in a patio surrounded by pillars and a balcony on the first floor. There are very nice murals painted on the walls and there is a very nice atmosphere. All the waiters and waitresses were Mexican style clothing. You will also meet a lot of Mexicans here who come and lunch in the Casa.

Sopa de tortillas is my absolute favourite(but anything is good!)

And you should definately check out the dessert table!

    BUEN PROVECHO!!!!

  • Directions: It's very easy to reach the Casa de los Azulejos. It's on 5 de Mayo, close to the Torre Latinoamericana (on the same side - left side if you come from the Zócalo).

    Sanborns: Typical Mexican Cuisine
If you are getting thirsty or hungry, then I’d suggest you visit the "Casa de los Azulejos," which is now used as the location of a Sanburns. As many cities in Mexico, the Sanburns is a department store that has an annex restaurant offering tasty traditional meals.

Go ahead and try their nachos con frijoles y queso...they're just the best!

Sanborns: Authentically Veracruz, in Mexico City
  • Satisfaction:
  • The food is authentically Veracruz-style, which means both seafood and meat dishes served by attentie but unobtrusive waitstaff attired in traditional costumes/uniforms from the Gulf Coast state.

The restaurant (in business since 1955) is very popular with middle-class locals and businessmen entertaining foreign clients - this is an "off the beaten path" of foreign tourists, is one reason I like it so much . . . it's a "local" place.

The meal and atmosphere is enhanced by two types of strolling musicians - mariachi and jarocho players - both of which will play music for you at your table for about US$4 per song. Listening to the music, eating the food and sipping one of the excellent 100% Agave Tequila's from the bar will make you think you're in a dream.

My favorite starter is either i) the rich Caldo Tlalpeño, or ii) a bowl of Crema de Chile Poblano. The restaurant also serves shellfish as a starter. I usually follow the starter with a main course of Arrachera - a thin steak grilled to perfection and served with guacamole, grilled nopal and refried beans. What you eat here tastes as if you were sitting along the waterfront in Veracruz eating the same thing - it's that good.

    Sanborns: Great Mexican food
  • Satisfaction:
  • Sanborns is a popular Mexican chain restaurant that is attached to a department store. The food is good, and I found it was easy for people with all kinds of eating limitations to eat there. I'm a vegetarian, and found it difficult at other places to find food, but not here. They make very good guacamole, salads and other traditional Mexican dishes. The prices are medium - I would say about $5 or $6 per person to eat a full meal here with drinks and appetizers.

Sanborns: Casa Azulejos or House of Tiles
  • Satisfaction:
  • Sanborns in Mexico is like Mcdonalds, there's one everywhere! It's a store with its own restaurant (or vice versa?). The one in downtown called Casa de los Azulejos is the most beautiful one (in my opinion). It's not the best reastaurant but it worths a visit.

Sanborns: beautiful courtyard setting, so so food
  • Satisfaction:
  • beautiful building, beautiful courtyard space, good service, but the food was just average
my food arrived luke warm but the waitress was very nice about it and offered to heat it right away. the manager checked up on everyone's table several times to see if everything was ok.
the food wasn't horrible but nothing to rave about
we'd likely return but probably just for drinks or coffee and enjoy the ambiance of the place

no favorite dish (from this one visit)
