Popular Sports Travel | Other Sports Travel Tips | All Tips (9) Like in most countries of the world, soccer is king in Mexico City and the Azteca is one of the largest stadiums in the world if you're interested in seeing a game.
However, if you want to see a sport that is a bit more of a cultural experience, I'd suggest seeing a bullfight. WARNING: this sport is controversial and isn't for everyone!
Plaza Mexicana, the largest bullring in the world, is a short walk from the San Antonio Metro station on the western end of town. Las Corridas de Toros (the bullfights) take place on Sundays at 4pm (but don't worry if you arrive a little late, there are many fights) between October and early April. I paid 360 pesos for a great seat in the Primera Tendida, which is very low in the stadium and close to the action. You can pay a lot less if you want to sit higher and if you don't mind being in the sun. At the ticket window, you can indicate that you prefer the "sombre" (shade) and can let them know that you're okay with sitting in the "sol" (sun).

In the south of the city, on a place called Colonia Nochebuena, You`ll find the "Azul" stadium and the "Plaza M?xico". Both were intended to be part of the "Ciudad de los deportes" (sports city), a complex designed by Neguib Sim?n and Moises Cosio wich was supposed to also include stadiums for Swimming, Boxing, Fighting, Bowling, Front?n and Tennis. Only the Football and the Bullfighting stadiums were built.
The Azul stadium hosts the Cruz Azul games, it was inaugurated in 1947 with a match between Veracruz (Mexico champion that year) and Racing (From Argentina), the first goal was scored by Aguirre from Racing. The stadium was the first one built with cement in Mexico, and today it is the oldest in the city. All the Mexico City teams played here until 1956 when they all moved to a new stadium. The stadium was abandoned until 1991, when the Atlante moved back here, the Cruz Azul plays here since 1996.
The tickets to see the matchs (saturdays at 17:00) are around $150 pesos, and i must say this is one of the safest stadiums in Mexico.
The bullfighting plaza is beside the stadium, it was inaugurated in 1946 by Luis Procuna, Luis Castro and Manuel Rodr?guez. Some weeks after that the bullfighter Silverio P?rez became the first person to cut an ear and a tail in the Plaza.
The plaza M?xico is the biggest bullfighting plaza in the world (41,262 seats), the statues at the entrance were made by the valencian sculptor Alfredo Just. Bullfights are celebrated on sundays, you should know that in bullfights the bull is tortuted (It is sticked with blades) for a long time before it is killed, I am completely against this activity and I only add it here to give you the most accurate information.
If you are traveling here by car consider there are no parking lots around.

The number 1 sport in Mexico is of course Futbol (soccer). There are many teams that play weekends throughout the country. Mexico City is home to many of the teams with America playing in the huge Stadium Azteca and the University Pumas playing in the old Olympic Stadium being amoing them. Even if you are not a futbol fan, attending a game is still worth while to see the passonite fans at there best chanting team songs and celebrating offensive chances. Tickets to game vary from 50 pesos to 230 pesos +. My only advice would be to check which teams are playing and try to avoid wearing team colors to avoid making any unwanted enemies for the day. Don't you miss the opportunity to go to a soccer match. It's the sport with most fans around Mexico and being in the stadium is something you gotta experience, specially one of this matches: America vs Guadalajara or America vs Pumas. One hour of play costs between Pesos $75 and Pesos $100 typically. No membership to a club is required although some of the nicest courts can be found in places like SportsWorld - private clubs.

Watched a Club America, the D.F's team against the Jaguares in Estadio Azteca. WOW...the fans are crazy!!! Tried to cheer with them everytime. They are very loyal, btw. Makes you wish that American fans had this intensity. And you definitely want to be a part of it.
We bought tickets from the Mexican Ticketmaster online and got tickets for about $48, but we forgot the card we charged it on..so we bought tickets at the stadium for 180 pesos which is about $17 or so...and we were right in the middle of the field. Beers were about $2.50 each.
You can't bring backpacks in so you have to check them outside with some vendors. They are safe. They hold backpacks and belts.

Some people may not like bull fights because they are violent but I love it. In Mexico its also just part of the culture. Unfortuneatley I didnt see a bull fight on this visit but I didnt get to visit the Plaza de Toros. I even got a tour of the place for free. I actually didnt get down here we just saw it from the Turibus on our to and from Coyoacan. On the way passing the Stadium we had no problems we saw all the students coming out to protest something. There were alot of them. On the way back something happened. There were ambulance and police and we were sent on a detour through the entire Universty campus. The Guide on the Turibus tried to play it off and said we are getting a free tour of the university.
The Estadio Olympico is to the south of the city and there is a capacity for 72000 seats/people. Their home team is the Pumas and they play soccer. They also have American football games here too. Theme: Sports WatchingAddress: Insurgentes Avenue Sur

We came here and got a little tour of the place. Nothing was going on so security let us in and walked us around. He even took pictures for us.
This place is gigantic and I can imagine how crazy it gets when they have a futbol game! All I know is that when i come back I will see a game here. Security give a a little tour of the place, gave us some of the history, and just alot of information. He let us even go onto the field.
Ok so what is so great about this place? It is said to be the biggest stadium in the world! It was built in 1966 and has a full capacity for 129300 seats.
Soccer (futbol) games can be watched here as well as concerts.
