Taxis and Radiotaxis
There are a lot of Taxis in Mexico City, they are green and white and they have a sign in the door with the word taxi.
A lot of people says they are insecure, but legal taxis aren`t.
illegal taxis are almost for sure dangerous but htey are not often found in the touristic zones, you should be specil carefull during the night, if you can avoid taxis in that time of the day and try to avoid being alone.
I don`t think a lot of drivers (appart from the ones in the airport) speak english so it would be a good idea to take a map or an adress with you.
I found some useful security recomendations here: http://www.mexicocity.com.mx/taxis2.html
There are some radiotaxis services in Mexico, they far more comfortable and they are secure, you may contact them by phone or by internet, the only problem is that you`ll have to wait for them and that they are more expensive, but they are a security guarantee
Taking the taxi from the airport
It's not as daunting as people like to make it to be. After goign through customs and picking up your luggage you're goign to come through the doors immediately go to your left and you will see a booth to purchase a ticket for a taxi. Just state where you want to go and they and they will tell you the price. YOu then proceed to the left and through the doors to go outside. You present your ticket to one of the men (for the yellow taxis) who will direct you as to what taxi to get into. You don't have to worry about getting ripped off or worry about getting mugged.
Also it's always good to have the address (or intersection) of where you want to go on a piece of a paper if you don't know Spanish.

...heed the warnings and take the official, licensed AIRPORT TAXIS to and from the AIRPORT. These are the yellow ones with a little airplane logo enblazoned on their side. The odd thing is that upon arrival, as we worked our way through the maze and hallways of MEX to get outside, we came upon two taxi stands inside the terminal, next to each other, in fact attached to each other. Both proclaimed they were the genuine article, of course only one had that distinguishing airplane logo. The other stand's agent girl was hollering louder so we walked up to her but when she pointed out it would be 240 pesos for a ride to the Zona Rosa district, we didn't hesitate to cross over to the other counter. In Spanish or in English, everyone understands "Are you insane?!?!" Naturally, the really offical taxi cost half as much as its sheister neighbor company, and off we went. Sheesh.

They say not to use little green cabs that are famous for kidnappings. We asked our local cab driver if that was true and he confirmed it. Ask your hotel to call a cab for you and negotiate the price BEFORE you get in.

Taking a cab at the airport
From the airport, you will have taxi drivers buzzing around you like flies!
The trick is to go inside to the ground transportation counter. There they will tell you the reasonable price according to your destination, you pay at the counter and receive a ticket slip.
Now all you have to do is go outside and easily find a cab that will accept your slip to bring you to your destination. Tips at your pleasure.
Oh yes, there are also few yellow Volkswagen Beetle taxis. I don't know what the difference is with the green ones, maybe just another company? Who knows . . .
